City of New Orleans Wreck Estimates

I found the reports of the accident further down the topic list and reading your responses to the news, makes me feel very sad for most of you! There were people involved in the accident and the majority of you go on and on and on with your concern about damage to engines, tracks, carriages...

    "City" on the ground!

I can't believe that with all the replies to this thread, only about TWO mention passengers and how they feel for them and their families! Can't believe that most of you are more concerned with carriages and machinery than with people. Strange!

City of New Orleans Wreck Estimates

Been out of touch for a few days. When and where was this accident? Any casualties? Respondents here seem more interested in the damage to carriages etc than to passengers! Sorry if it's old news and you've covered the human cost already - it's just that the level of interest in all the...

Off. Amtrak Website not User Friendly

I managed to book our fares and accommodation no trouble on the website. Don't know if booking them from New Zealand made any difference - shouldn't think it would - had them sent to family in the US who will send them on to us. Otherwise I'm not sure if we could have booked them online and...

Post-Madrid, vigilance heightened on U.S. railways

Don't you think someone intending illegal actions, would learn more about rail services, trains, schedules, security etc, from a variety of websites than from hanging around railway stations risking some official kicking them out of the place for taking photos? I've certainly learnt plenty just...

    BNSF derailment disrupts the Builder

I noticed that on March 2/3 The EBuilder was three hours late leaving Portland, and was nearly five hours late arriving in St Paul. Does anyone know the reason for that delay?

    Guaranteed Connection

I reread some replies to questions about guaranteed connections and would like to hear from anyone who, with sleeper accommodation booked, has actually experienced being on a train (more specifically the CStarlight) that has not made a connection. When did you realise the train was too late to...

This is why you carry two engines

Unaccustomed as I am to the "lingo" of trains and such, I must admit I was shocked when I read "92 dead in Avon Park!!!" Please spare my heart any future shocks and label your discussion topic a little less dramatically! Pheww!! I had visions of 92 dead bodies littered about some...

    Xian to Urumqi

Following an exhausting day touring around town and visiting the site of the Terracotta Soldiers near Lintong, we took a taxi - another story all to itself! - to the main railway station. We stopped at least two hundred metres away from the entrance and when we exhorted the driver to carry on...

Live Chat every Sunday 7PM ET

Thanks. I have a list made up comparing times with here and the time in Minneapolis where our son lives. Hadn't been able to drag myself away from here yet as I love flipping through all the posts - had a look at the photos of the almost accident posted a couple of days ago. Strewth - enough to...

Live Chat every Sunday 7PM ET

Trying to connect to and have a "chat" but I guess I am a day ahead of everyone else! I get into the room OK and have even seen my name in lovely pink letters but no-one else is around. I'll try again later when someone else hopefully will be there to respond! In NZ, it's 4.22 p.m. Sunday...

    Tipping Sleeping Car attendants

Alan. Keep your hair on!! Guess I should have been a bit more specific in my statement. We do tip when in the US - restaurants etc. Always have done. Just haven't travelled in a sleeper with Amtrak before so that is why I said we'd probably wait and see what the service is like before we...

    Best and Worst

Best - most interesting but not necessarily most comfortable - was the ride from Urumqi in NthWest China through the mountains to Alma Ata in Kazakhstan. Best for comfort but quite boring - TGV Lausanne to Paris. Worst - comfortwise was having to share the carriage with drunken hostile guards...

    Other Countries, Other Trains??

Thanks for that - I had read similar on Lonely Planet. We know how to keep calm - travelling through Russia and India have taught us that! Could someone please explain the blue blobs next to everyone's name!! Also why are some little envelopes blue, some orange and some blue ones even have...
