    Coast Starlight discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

The second week in April I'm on the Coast Starlight Seattle to Los Angeles. I've already booked an upper level roomette. For this trip I very much want to be on the left side (wrong side for most people) of the train. Question #1: Will Amtrak using the Transdorm at that time (which is also...

    Thanksgiving Fares NYP-BOS

Yahoo posted this regarding New York City to Boston fares for Wednesday, November 22. A Brooklyn man active in local politics posted information on one-way coach fares for two adults and two children two months out: $774. I looked it up within the last 30 minutes and the prices match...

    California Zephyr discussion

Hmmm. That would be the complex solution to the simple problem. I just enjoyed the bedroom, which happened to be on the opposite side of the train from my two previous Zephyr trips.

    California Zephyr discussion

Bedroom Upgrade for $219 over Roomette :) In June I booked a roomette on the California Zephyr (Emeryville to Chicago, connecting on to Boston) for September 11th. I got #14 downstairs, which sounds like the last room available ($1,428.70). I wanted to be upstairs, so I called in every few...

California Zephyr issues in Salt Lake City

No need to speculate what it looks like at night -- I posted a link to a night 360 panoramic a few posts above.

California Zephyr issues in Salt Lake City

So...It looked something like this? (360 panoramic from Google, train pointed in the opposite direction.)

Last Summer trip on the Eagle an New Flex

That's actually a rational approach. Two Flex meals in a row (lunch and dinner) is a bit heavy. My preferred Flex 2.0 lunch is the cafe's cheese/cracker tray along with the "normal" hot roll, salads (two if you ask nicely), desert, and beverage. I'll do this even if I have to buy the...

Derailment closes world's longest Rail Tunnel in Switzerland until 2024

"...scattering wine, lemonade and other goods along the tunnel." Who set up that manifest? Wine and cheese -- OK. Lemonade and chicken nuggets -- OK. But wine and lemonade?

    Capitol Limited CHI-WAS luggage question

Somewhere in the not-so-distant past an Amtrak employee mentioned to me that the lower level luggage rack was actually intended for the use of passengers who were traveling to and/or from stations that did not have baggage service.

What time of year to travel cross country

I like one or two weeks on the sunny side of the equinox. My personal bias is that a trifecta with the Southwest Chief, the California Zephyr, and the Coast Starlight gives you a really nice variety of landscapes.

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

If that's the spot, here is a shot looking north from 118/Los Angeles Ave. There is a STOP sign (reddish smudge) above a white rectangular sign that typically identifies it as a private crossing...So no gates and no red lights.

Terrifying moment after plane door opens mid-air

In the video you will see information about the mechanism of the door itself (including the booster cylinder that allows the door to open into the wind) as well as a chart showing the cabin pressure vs the atmospheric pressure as the aircraft descends to land. That might help calm down some the...

Terrifying moment after plane door opens mid-air

This video should answer most of the questions: Juan Browne is an ATP and his YouTube channel is pretty rational.

Remembering the Golden Age of Airline Food

In 1977 I had United flights from San Francisco to the Hampton Roads area. The first leg was a "very" red eye to Chicago and breakfast was prepared (with some items to order) in the galley below the main deck. More recently (but still too long ago) in the deregulated era, I made a lot of...
