I checked 5 big boxes on Amtrak in January from Vancouver, BC to Orlando, FL. Sure, they were a little battered when I got here, but nothing surprising after that long of a trip.

I took the SB Meteor starting at WAS in January - I boarded, met my SCA and had a chat with him, and went to dinner. I was back in my roomette by 8:30.

I took a VAN>SEA>CHI>WAS>ORL trip in January and on none of the three overnight trains I was on did I get an amenity kit.

I had Nancy on my EB trip from SEA->CHI in January, she was awesome. :) The toilets stopped working in our car just before Havre and she kept asking if I wanted to change cars, which I didn't since I was the only person on the lower level. lol She just always made sure to check on me...

If you rented a car - check out the Cascades! ESPECIALLY in June, it will be gorgeous up at Mt. Rainier. *sigh* I want to move back. :(

I had my roomette lower bed down the entire trip.

While eastern Montana and North Dakota are flat and plain, they are definitely beautiful because it just makes you think about how out there you really are. I would love to do the EB again.

I will second the Anthony's recommendation. Love that restaurant.

I did a long trip this month, VAN to ORL. The EB was 40 min early into Chicago, the CL was 25 minutes early into DC, and the SM was only 10 minutes late.

I used flip flops to go to the bathroom/shower. Unfortunately for me on my EB route, the toilets stopped working in our car so I had to go to the next. I did use flip flops, but when crossing between cars I made sure not to step on the joint just in case.

I liked being parallel. I found that I got motion sickness the first night on the train from the swaying back and forth. Rest of the nights were fine once I got used to the movement, though. I do have to say that I thought the ride in the Silver Meteor was better than on the Superliners...

Glad I left on Friday! Clear weather all the way to Orlando from Seattle.

I just got off of the #8 here in Chicago about 1.5hrs ago. I had roomette 11 in 0831 and let me tell you what - I would not trade for an upstairs roomette. It was much quieter, less rocky (I ended up getting motion sickness from the bit of rocking, though), closer to your carry-on, closer to...
