It costs more to have a layover

Perhaps it is just that the fare for the next day (after your layover) is $50 more than the fare for the same day (if you didn't layover). If you're looking at first class, pricing tiers and how many rooms are already booked are a factor as well.

When Did They Stop Wying At CUS?

They wyed the Capitol Limited when we came into CHI back in Feb. '05.

    Empire Builder cancelled today?

That explanation was in the back of my head too, but I was apparently so foolish as to think that a detour East of St Paul should not affect the ability to report the status over the entire route!

    Empire Builder cancelled today?

If the Train Status page on Amtrak.com is to be believed, the Westbound trains have been arriving, but they haven't sent an Eastbound train out since Saturday. If they keep that up, they're going to run out of Train sets in Chicago! I look forward to finding out what is going on, since I'm...

    Empire Builder cancelled today?

I know they've been getting a lot of snow in Montana. Perhaps there are weather issues.

Be careful when taking pictures of Amtrak trains!

Maybe that's why this guy was an Amtrak cop and not a street cop.

    Empire Builder goodies

Have any pictures of the refurbished lounges been posted anywhere? I'm taking the EB in October, but am anxious to see what the redone lounges look like now!

Is this a decent price or should I wait?

So, is there a site where I can see these fare 'buckets', or is your info from a non-published source? I'm curious what the Bedroom buckets are for the Empire Builder (so I guess they would be DS, DA, DB, DC, and DD). Is there a surcharge for the Bedroom Suite, or is it just cost for the two...

Is this a decent price or should I wait?

You have to add in your two coach fares. The prices posted are just the additional cost for the roomette on top of the base coach fare(s).

Is this a decent price or should I wait?

Have you priced going coach for one night and a sleeper for the other night? Not sure if it would save you much, but it might.

    Possible CA Zephyr Delays

A truck carrying explosives overturned, caught fire and exploded, leaving a massive crater, and damaging nearby UP rail, also used by Amtrak. Miraculously, noone was killed -- they had enough time to escape the area. http://kutv.com/topstories/local_story_222165020.html

    Empire Builder/ Coast Starlight seating

I also find that after dark, it is difficult to see out the lounge windows with the lights on. Then your sleeper with the door and curtains closed and the lights turned off allows a better view of the outside.

Can three people sleep in a bedroom on a train?

One important advantage of the deluxe room (or bedroom, as they now call it) over the family bedroom is that it is on the upper level, so you get a better view out your window. Then again, if you can get the family bedroom for 1/2 the price, you can always just go to the lounge for a better view!

Never mind on the train being full.

It all depends on when you book, and how popular a date is. Amtrak uses a price scale where the price goes up as availability goes down. I figure that makes sense, but I was shocked to see just how wide that price range was. I booked in March for an October trip on the Empire Builder from MSP...
