Turns out I got to ride the Zephyr after all. Good trip, on time at CHI 9-24 (< 1 hr late). Only significant delay was waiting to cross the Mississippi - would have arrived Chicago early barring that pause.
Breakfast in the dining car was very poor, though; the omlet was solid road kill...
I have re-booked to Chicago through Portland from San Francisco, 9-20ish IIRC (too much scanning webpages - it's all a blur...). It looks plausible; too bad going through so many mountains at night and I'll probably be dead meat from lack of sleep, but Oh Well! I'll post when I get to Chicago...

OK, I found a difference in the 2nd train #28 item at the bottom of the web page: It contains a "Buy Rooms" button. That's a non-issue for me, but it sure looks confusing because you start to wonder whether there's more than one train and whether you might get the wrong one, etc, etc.

I did not know about the busing to catch the EB. Thanks. Looking at the last few days schedules, it looks like the CS usually arrives w/in the hour (ie. in time for the connection); also, it looks like the EB departs late a fair amount of the time, so even if the CS is more than an hour late...
I've ridden the Zephyr every year or two since 98, but I haven't had so much trouble scheduling 'til now (with all the track problems).
Now I'm looking at what other train options I may have to get to Chicago from San Francisco. It looks like the Coast Starlight to PDX to get on the Empire...
