This happened to me earlier in the fall, try to make an EB to LSL connection. Instead Amtrak put us up at the Swissotel, and gave us food vouchers; then put us on the LSL the next day. Your son doesn't need to do anything; Amtrak does it automatically. BTW, Swissotel is very nice.
