    Albany station

Recently, my wife and I went to Albany. We discovered that the station is actually in Rensselaer. Does anyone know why there isn't a station in Albany?

    first trip

Wow! My wife and I just took our first trip on Amtrak. NYP to ALB. What a comfortable trip. Such a difference from flying. We're hooked. I think our next trip will be to Providence, next year.

    letter to Alex Kummant

Good to know, but this will be my first trip, so I'm excited. If all goes well, we'll be taking Amtrak as much as possible.

We'll be traveling to Albany from New York Penn Station. Next year maybe a trip to Providence.

I'm going to Napa Valley next month. Do you know specifically where I can find this train?

    letter to Alex Kummant

I sent a letter to Alex Kummant about 2 months ago. I brought up several issues, and didn't really expect a response, except maybe a generic letter like "Thanks for your interest in Amtrak, blah, blah blah". I actually got a letter from customer service, addressing 2 of the issues. First, Alex...

    blown trip

In answer to your question about the airlines, I know a woman who showed up at the Northwest check-in with the wrong tickets. They simply printed new ones. No hassle.

    blown trip

I just booked a trip from NYP to ALB for September. I went to Penn Station so I could ask questions in person. Somewhere between Penn Station and home, I lost the tickets. I called Amtrak at home, and inquired about getting replacements. I was informed that Amtrak's "policy" is that they are...

Why is Amtrak coach more expensive than flying?

On the New York end, it's a time/money equation; the bus/subway trip would be about 2 hours vs. 20 minutes. At the other end, I looked into Bart/Golden Gate Transit deal. It's not as cut and dried as you think. Not all of Golden Gate Transit's buses allow baggage. They weren't designed for that.

    NYP to PHL

I was recently checking schedules and fares from NYP to PHL. This one caught my eye: The 111 takes 1hour/25minutes. The cost for coach is $43. The 2103 Acela takes 1hour/13 minutes. The cost is $125. So if, I'm reading this right, it would cost an extra $82 just to save 12 minutes. Why would...

Why is Amtrak coach more expensive than flying?

Here's how the $200 breaks down:from my apartment in Brooklyn to JFK using a car service $30. At the other end, SFO to Petaluma, the only option is the Airport bus. $30 per person, one-way. Coming back, that's $60 to SFo, and at JFK, we have to take a yellow cab, which is metered. That's another...

Why is Amtrak coach more expensive than flying?

I keep reading posts from people that want to compare airline prices to Amtrak prices. The thing is, you have to factor in the price of getting to and from the airport. Last October, my wife and I flew from JFK to SFO. It cost me $200 to get to and from the airports! Amtrak goes from downtown...

    traveling on the Crescent

Thanks for the tip, Bob.I just looked into the fare for 2 using a roomette both directions. The price I came up with was about $940. I was thinking that there must be a better way.

    traveling on the Crescent

Yes, by accommodations I meant sleepers. I noticed that the sizes seem to vary by letter. Do they go from a to h? By cars, I was referring to Superliner vs Silverliner or Viewliner. I'm confused about that. There's just me and my wife, so we don't need a big bedroom. Good to know that this is a...
