Boardman: Amtrak Commits to End Food and Beverage Losses

I'm not sure this is true. According to the treasury department businesses can set their own policies for what they accept as payment. I don't see anything about paying in advance or after services are rendered.

    Who travels the greatest distance?

I used to live in Emeryville! That was about four years ago and I was within reasonable walking distance of the station. Now I'm about 30 miles from SJC and 36 miles from SNS. If I could flag down the Coast Starlight at Wastonville Junction, I'd only be 20 miles away ;)

Best Amtrak entrance into a city?

I guess you're not really coming into the city proper, but the ride along the SF Bay into Emeryville on the CZ is nice--especially when there's not much fog and the whole of San Francisco and the Golden Gate are visible.

    Maximizing AGR points

Dagnabbit! I knew I put this in the wrong forum, but forgot to fix that! Thanks for moving it :) Anywho, thanks for the thoughtful replies so far. Those of you who've booked trips with a combo of AGR points and cash, is it hard to do? (I'm really a neophyte at this!)

    Maximizing AGR points

I know this is a well tread topic, but I had a hard time finding concise, up-to-date info here (feel free to point me towards an old discussion!) Anyway, I've built up a decent chunk of AGR points and would like to cash in this summer/fall. I live near the Bay Area (CA) and EMY and San Jose are...

WiFi in Pacific Parlor Car on Coast Starlight

I've taken two round trips in the past 6 months, San Jose to Seattle and back, and it's never worked on any of them. So, I'd say don't count on it. However, the Parlour Car is definitely worth it, even if it's wifi-less.

Posters of the Amtrak routes - where to get?

Here's the online store of the artist, Michael Schwab.

    WiFi failures

After 6 years in the Bay Area I finally had the opportunity to take the Coast Starlight up and back from the Pacific Northwest. I took the Starlight up to Seattle for a conference, then took the Cascades up to Vancouver to visit a colleague, then the same train back to Seattle, and then the...

    California Zephyr

Just got off the Eastbound Zephyr from Emeryville to Galesburg (12/22-12/24). We took the Moffat tunnel route. There had been conflicting info as to whether we would be rerouted, but in the end there was no detour or major delays. Edit: Sleepers were on the back, too!

    Amtrak in Wyoming

Yep. I'm on the Zephyr leaving tomorrow (22nd) from Emeryville and just got off the phone with Amtrak and they said it will detour. Not sure how I feel about that (I'm going to Galesburg, so I'm in the clear as far as busing).

New Year''s Eve on the Train

I'll be celebrating New Years on the Westbound California Zephyr, somewhere in Utah (theoretically 1/2 an hour after leaving Salt Lake City). I don't have any special plans other than having a bottle of prosecco close by!

    Dogs and Senior Dudes

Well, remember that the dog has to be well behaved; if it is deemed dangerous or disruptive, it can be removed even if it is a valid service animal. According to the ADA website (see my previous post) this includes things like barking and urinating.

    Dogs and Senior Dudes

I don't think this is true. According to the ADA's website: "The ADA defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under...

    Hat Etiquette

Hi everyone! So I have an atypical question that the folks from a bygone era may be best able to answer for me. Given my receding hairline, my scalp's susceptibility to sunburn, and a desire to change fashion trends, I have started wearing more formal hats (fedoras and the like). However...

    Bed Bugs Invade New York

A couple of things. First, much of the conventional wisdom on DDT is a myth. It's still used in places where malaria is a problem, but mosquito resistance to its overuse is an issue. As for bedbugs, heating the room they are in to > 130* seems to be an effective measure now that they've...

    Coast Starlight - which direction?

Hi all, Thank you so much for the advice, I knew you'd all come through. I think I'll go with the consensus and get a roommette for the N/B route. Thanks again!

    Coast Starlight - which direction?

Hi all, I'm going to be traveling from San Jose to LA and back on the Coast Starlight sometime next month. I'd like to experience the Pacific Parlor Car, but my budget being what it is, I can only justify upgrading to first class in one direction. Is there one direction which would be better to...

    Big 10 Conference

It's about a 1 1/2 to 2 mile walk. Otherwise there's a good bus service and plentiful cabs. The station is in downtown Champaign which is a very quaint little spot with several nice restaurants and bars.

    Amtrak Politics

I won't argue against this except to say that this is a very controversial opinion. I say this not to start a political debate, but only to make sure that everyone knows there's another side, which I, of course, agree with :)

Conservatives and Mass Transit: all aboard !

I'm pretty liberal, a socialist, actually. However, I know a lot of conservatives and I know that anything I say in favor of public transport won't be taken entirely seriously by them. This is not because they are conservatives, but are people. I'm sure that there are conservative ideas that if...
