I'm not sure this is true. According to the treasury department businesses can set their own policies for what they accept as payment. I don't see anything about paying in advance or after services are rendered.

I used to live in Emeryville! That was about four years ago and I was within reasonable walking distance of the station. Now I'm about 30 miles from SJC and 36 miles from SNS. If I could flag down the Coast Starlight at Wastonville Junction, I'd only be 20 miles away ;)

I guess you're not really coming into the city proper, but the ride along the SF Bay into Emeryville on the CZ is nice--especially when there's not much fog and the whole of San Francisco and the Golden Gate are visible.

Just got off the Eastbound Zephyr from Emeryville to Galesburg (12/22-12/24). We took the Moffat tunnel route. There had been conflicting info as to whether we would be rerouted, but in the end there was no detour or major delays. Edit: Sleepers were on the back, too!

Yep. I'm on the Zephyr leaving tomorrow (22nd) from Emeryville and just got off the phone with Amtrak and they said it will detour. Not sure how I feel about that (I'm going to Galesburg, so I'm in the clear as far as busing).

It's about a 1 1/2 to 2 mile walk. Otherwise there's a good bus service and plentiful cabs. The station is in downtown Champaign which is a very quaint little spot with several nice restaurants and bars.
