Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

A step up from flex.At least you have a choice of sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs. Going from San Antonio to New York is three days of flex. Inhuman

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Traditional dining is on all the Western trains except The Texas Eagle. It’s also on The Silvers. Flex food(can’t call it dining) is served on The Cardinal, The Crescent, Texas Eagle,Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited. The City of New Orleans has sleeper passengers choose from the cafe car...

    Fares that don't make sense

$731 one person roomette is the lowest price I could find between Seattle and LA, Not sure if that is low bucket or not. Have a feeling it is.

    Fares that don't make sense

Another one night train,The Coast Starlight is now charging close to $800 for a one person roomette. That’s the lowest I could find checking multiple dates. This is getting ridiculous

    Fares that don't make sense

Always great to find low bucket. They are getting harder and harder to find. Like you,I won’t pay more than $650 for any Western trip from Chicago. Guess I won’t be riding the Southwest Chief again. $767 is the lowest price I can find, checking many dates. Still a relative bargain is the Texas...

    Fares that don't make sense

That is precisely what is wrong with Amtrak’s inane pricing structure

    Fares that don't make sense

Last year I booked Coach from Portland to LA. Lowest price on roomettes were almost $700. I did a bid up of $250, about $40 more than the minimum. With the Coach fare of $95 that put the entire trip at $345. I got the bid up. This is happening quite a bit,I would imagine.

    Fares that don't make sense

Amtrak’s pricing has gone “off the rails”. Call it dynamic pricing, what the market will allow or whatever, as a dedicated Amtrak rider for decades, I m finding I can no longer justify what Amtrak asks. $2000 plus bedrooms from Chicago to the West Coast are routine. Even roomettes have...

I hope so. How about traditional dining? Any word?

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

I’ve seen fares as high as $6000 for a berth from Toronto to Vancouver. Of course, like Amtrak, if you go by Coach for that length it’s usually $500 or less.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Imagine traveling from San Antonio to New York. Three days of flex. Again. Why won’t they let you substitute something from the cafe car without paying extra? They have decent sandwiches. Seems so simple, yet it isn’t done.

Rail for Less: a fare checking site

Still a puzzlement why Amtrak’s web site can’t follow airlines and give a month or at least two weeks in advance fares for Coach and sleepers. Of course Amtrak did follow airlines by eliminating many perks and downgrading food on the five LD trains that still have flex.

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

It’$767, not $737 on the Chief. I checked July and August, as well. Seems $767 on the Chief and $960 on the Eagle are the lowest fares now from LA to Chicago. Of course, people will pay it, but as a long time Amtrak rider, personally Amtrak’s fares on a route I have been taking for decades is...

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Always looking for my next trip,I tried every day in October and November for the SW Chief and Texas Eagle from LA to Chicago one person senior fare and the lowest fares I could find were $737 for the Chief and $960 for The Texas Eagle. Until recently $899(used to be $600) fares came up for the...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Any news on when the remaining trains still stuck with flex return to traditional dining? If logic prevails(and I’m sure it won’t) the first two trains should be The Texas Eagle and The Crescent, because of their long running time.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

The sandwiches served in the cafe car are pretty good. Why can’t they be served as a substitute for the TV dinners? If you are going from San Antonio to New York in a sleeper, that’s three days of flex crap. Why doesn’t Amtrak allow substitutions from the cafe car. It’s actually a step up.

Pittsburgh Amtrak Station past, present and future

You can’t buy coffee on 29,being it arrives at Midnight and the snack car on 42 The Pennsylvanian opens an hour after departure, so if you get off 30 in Pittsburgh it’s almost four hours. I’m just thinking of a small area where you can buy coffee, soft drinks and snacks. As I mentioned, it’s at...

Pittsburgh Amtrak Station past, present and future

A golden opportunity awaits anyone who opens a coffee stand with the basic amenities inside the dungeon aka Pittsburgh Amtrak. Four hours at night waiting on the Capitol Limited and over two hours in the morning Eastbound waiting on the Pennsylvanian. Why hasn’t this been done? The wait for the...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

The Crescent and The Texas Eagle should be the next trains to return to traditional dining. Of course,I have no proof but these are the two longest routes still with flex. Agree with many, flex food ranges from awful to barely adequate and I have had many flex meals. To pay what sleepers go for...

New Cancellation Policy at Amtrak (August 2023)

Southwest will give you a voucher if you cancel. No cancellation fee. I wish Amtrak would do that. There are times I have to cancel and don’t have any immediate plans to rebook. A voucher would be ideal for future travel, yet Amtrak doesn’t do that.WHY?
