Southwest Chief trip in 2025 questions

    5. You would have to bring it on with you as carry-on for the first leg. There should be large luggage racks in the train along with overhead racks, so storing it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Staff would be there to help you get it on board the train. At Chicago, you would then go to the...

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I heard that they switched out a sleeper (might’ve been the transdorm). I think the baggage car was just a casualty

    Horn noise and fumes

When I was on the CONO I think I was in the second car (behind the transdorm), with the sole engine in front of the transition sleeper. The horn was definitely the loudest i’ve experienced, but it didn’t interrupt anything

    Texas Eagle discussion

Apparently there's a possibility of the Eagle getting the SSL back in October. Not holding my breath.

    Metra reliability

Probably from Chicago out to Glen Ellyn and back. I've also looked at shorter trips taking Metra out and the L back, but not too worried about that because it'd be short and easy to get back to downtown Chicago.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion 2024 H1

I don't like that the suggested lounge only has seating on one side of the train. Sometimes theres only great views on one side and a wall on the other, so during those cases everyone would presumably want to stand and go into the pathway to see the view.

    Metra reliability

I have a trip planned this summer and would love to take a trip on Metra before hopping on my long distance train. Does Metra receive many delays or cancellations, or can I reliably take a trip out of the city and back? The trip i was looking at has me getting back to chicago around 2 hours...

Preferred connection time between Long Distance (LD) trains

Probably a few hours. I'd love to be able to walk around the city (especially one like Chicago) for a bit before catching my next train. Train travel is all about seeing the country, so it'd be nice to actually experience some of it too.

If they serve dinner it will be with traditional dining. I have no idea if they will serve it though.

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Which car was pulled from the zephyr sometimes? Seems like I'll finally be able to get on the Zephyr this summer, but I'd like to be in the car that isn't at risk of being taken off.

That’s Singapore. Amtrak is not so tech saavy. Keeping things low maintenance would be ideal IMO.

Wow, this is a lot. Thanks for everyone pointing out information. I'll try to go through it myself, but probably won't have the time. This is really exciting.

    Amtrak Phase VII livery discussion

I agree. I don’t see Amtrak painting entire superliners at this stage.

    Equipment shortage?

Isn't Amtrak still in a pretty big equipment shortage? Especially due to the recent derailments.

Welcome to AU! This is great place to discuss everything Amtrak. Hope you have a great trip on the Zephyr, it's one of the ones I still need to tackle myself.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I think these for intercity trains is reasonable, but I think that they’re more unlikely for long distance replacements.
