    "Stowaway" on California Zephyr

Probably about as comfortable as sleeping in one of those upper sleeping-car berths.

Farewell to the Queen of the Skies

I don't fly so I guess I'll never have the experience of a 747, but my dad had an interesting one. At one point AT&T sent him to Saudi Arabia to help with establishing their new phone system (or something; that's the best I can recall) and he was flown there on a 747 - as the only passenger...

    New York Penn Station v3.0

I don't like those white stick leg support things outside.

    Amtrak features and comfort updates

Yes, I've heard the coach seats are fairly roomy. We were in a sleeper car, staying in a bedroom, and both of us found everything about it to be cramped.

    Amtrak features and comfort updates

Thoughts on the bedroom Superliners following our first LD trip recently on the CZ: The tray tables seemed fine to me. The foldout flaps were useful, though we mostly kept them folded up. I found that the table gave my crossed leg a place to rest against, which made the uncomfortable...

CZ bedroom CHI to SLC and back, late Aug/early Sept 2022

We were in a Superliner I westbound and a II eastbound.

CZ bedroom CHI to SLC and back, late Aug/early Sept 2022

So, our big first Amtrak trip. For the most part it went well: the 5 train westbound departed CHI on time and arrived at SLC about an hour and a half late, while the 6 train eastbound arrived at SLC about 40 minutes late and at CHI about an hour and a half late. We had anticipated possibly much...

    CZ 5 out of CHI

Now moving, 2 hrs 15 mins late. The mechanical delay will cause us to conflict with a freight, so another delay for that coming up, and a heat restriction on the rails will add another hour.

    CZ 5 out of CHI

CZ 5 stuck in Denver. They added a loco for the Rockies pull and apparently the new and the old aren't talking to each other. They have IT people working on it. Showing as 1 hr 39 min late, but that was before the problem.

    CZ 5 out of CHI

Just got informed by a brusque dining car attendant that photos are not allowed inside the train.

    CZ 5 out of CHI

    Now rolling.

    CZ 5 out of CHI

Our first LD trip together, very excited, SCA super nice, train departed on time - but the engine on one of the locos broke almost as soon as we left Union Station. Stopped while they try to fix it. Good times. Already 50 minutes late.

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

Any word on how long this washout will take to repair?

    Amtrak delays

Here's how the 6 train of the CZ has done arriving in CHI since mid July. Had my gal and I known of all this madness we would never have attempted this Yellowstone bucket-list trip by Amtrak! We'd have worked out some way to drive it or ride buses or something. And from what I'm reading in these...

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

We're on 532 in late August on the 5 train. Fingers crossed! And 632 on the 6 train a few days into September, back to CHI - that one has me very nervous now. Flying is not an option.

SLC checked luggage, eastbound to CHI

Hi, anybody have any experience with checking luggage at the SLC station for the 3:30 a.m. scheduled departure of the California Zephyr to Chicago? We'll be boarding the 6 train there in the coming weeks. I had seen someone say that Amtrak requires checked luggage be done at any station at least...

    California Zephyr: consist?

Good lord. I hope they don't cancel our late-August/early September trains out to SLC and back! I don't fly, so that would condemn us to driving.

How many trains run as the California Zephyr?

This may be a silly question from a forum newbie, but - how many Zephyrs run simultaneously? Are there just a single No. 5 and No. 6 train running at any given moment, or more than that? I ask because the "track your train" page on Amtrak seems to show two of each, at different places on the line.

    New Infrastructure Spending

Having not ridden Amtrak in 15 years, and taking the California Zephyr in a few weeks, I'm curious if this allocation has affected the morale of train employees at stations and onboard. Is there a sense of hope and positivity among them, or is it not something they seem to think about?

California Zephyr not stopping at Salt Lake City later this year?

FYI the red line and exclamation point at the top of our bookings seems to have been a glitch in the app. Yesterday I checked again; as I refreshed the screen, the words "train cancelled" appeared briefly on the red line, then the whole line and point disappeared and both bookings now appear...
