I would choose Glenwood Springs over Salt Lake City for the hot springs and beautiful mountain scenery. Also, sometimes a smaller town can be a nice change from big cities.

La Brea tar pits. There are other museums in the area too. Or Griffith Park and the zoo, even closer to downtown.

Grover Beach in CA has a station a block from the beach with restaurants and motels nearby. Surf liners stop there, not the Coast Starlight. Another beach stop is Lompoc Surf which has no businesses at all nearby, only restrooms.

The Coast Starlight had the sleepers in the back for my trips on Friday 7/14 and Monday 7/17.

Rail service to San Diego is scheduled to resume on July 17. Until the next landslide, anyway.

A bus from Oxnard to LAX would be very doable.

Ventura doesn't have a station, just a platform. Oxnard makes more sense.

There is actually no station in Ventura, just a platform next to the fairgrounds.

SFO has a BART station. In Oakland I think you have to catch a shuttle. San Jose has a 5 minute shuttle to the Caltrain station, which gets you to San Jose Diridon Amtrak.

There is an Amtrak/Metrolink station one block from the Burbank(Bob Hope) airport. They have shuttles, but we just walk.

In Oakland the Waterfront Hotel is right next to the Amtrak station at Jack London Square. The ferries to SF leave from there as well.

The proposed overnight train between LAX and SF has the potential to provide some healthy competition. This concept, if successful could even spread. Overnight trains are making a comeback in Europe.
