California Zephyr issues in Salt Lake City

100% agree with you. With Amtrak, you plan to go from point A to point B. All of a sudden, something gets in the way of that. Amtrak then thinks the solution is to get you back to point A. They wash their hands of you and tell you to get to point B on your own and at your own expense! it’s...

Agree. There seems to be no plan in place for urgent/crisis management. Rather it be a low level crisis or a high level crisis. Very unfortunate for rail riders.

California Zephyr issues in Salt Lake City

Not exactly. The train track was about 1/4 mile away from the station. And the engine was parked nearest the station. The people in the cars in back were no where near the lit up part. It’s dark, and we were crossing other tracks in the dark to get to the paved part. And, just because the...

California Zephyr issues in Salt Lake City

Or another way of stating it is: This is a split from a prior Zephyr thread regarding the lack of customer service that Amtrak provided to approximately 100 people when the 6 train on 8/18/23 had to terminate in SLC. This situation led to several upset passengers and one of those passengers...

California Zephyr issues in Salt Lake City

Thanks everyone for the support. i am not sure why some riders would think it is acceptable to be ditched in the middle of the night at a station that is surrounded by homeless people. Just because someone uses the word “detrained” doesn’t take away the fact that we were ditched. And the...

Zetharion and others, I will keep you posted about what becomes of all of our expenses. I spoke with the 800# yesterday (Saturday). I was advised to call customer relations. They are only open Monday thru Friday. Earlier in this thread, someone had asked me if I had called Amtrak at the...

Just wondering about this info on Amtrak’s website under “train status”. Is this accurate? The CZ from Friday, Aug 18 stopped in SLC and returned to Emeryville. Why is it stating it arrived in Chicago. Am I missing something? Thank You for helping.

Yes, they announced the problems around 10:30 pm. We arrived in SLC around 4:30 am. So they knew for 6 hours, probably longer because I am sure they knew of the problem well before they made it public knowledge. At first, we were told the train would be in SLC for 2 - 3 hours while they did...

Thank you for all the responses, especially Zetharion. It was a very frustrating situation, and continues to be one, as we had to rent a car in SLC and are currently driving cross country. I believe Amtrak should have handled the situation better. And I believe buses would have been an option...

Roads were not impassable. We never encountered one drop of rain, never saw one ounce of bad weather. Never saw one traffic alert about road closures. So a Bus was a definite possibility.

Terrible experience on Zephyr. Never will step foot on Amtrak again. Boarded in Emeryville on Friday, Aug. 18 2023. Train was one hour late with no explanation. When we were about 4 or 5 hours outside Salt Lake City, a vague announcement was made that the train would terminate in SLC...

Another question about Zephyr. Traveling in coach. And this may be a very stupid question. How will we know which cars are designated coach? Is there just one coach car? Or are there a couple coach cars? Will somebody tell us where to go or are we basically on our own to figure it out? also...

Another question…thank you all so much for being so patient and answering all my questions so far. Emeryville…. Someone recently asked about avoiding Emeryville and used the word sketchy. Can somebody please provide more details? We are definitely boarding in Emeryville and planning to spend...

More Zephyr question!! I have heard about the delays on long distance trains. And stopping on the track to wait on freight trains. My question is, when you are stopped is there any air conditioning or heat and electricity? I’m just wondering because we will be traveling during the summer and...

Hi, Couple questions regarding train travel, specifically the California Zephyr. I’ve searched online and still have a couple things I need clarification on. Boarding in Emeryville, CA and getting off in Naperville, IL. The Amtrak website states that there is no baggage service in...
