    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Thanks everyone. I'm planning to go in a roomette. I took the CZ and CL years ago and remember the communal dining, but wasn't sure if things had changed since then.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Thinking about booking a trip on the Coast Starlight this summer. I was wondering about single passengers in the dining car. Do you share a table with other single passengers like in the past, or do you get your own table now? Thank you.

California Zephyr or Southwest Chief, which do you recommend?

I have not tried the Southwest Chief, but I did ride the Zephyr as part of my cross-country train trip earlier this year. The scenery was just spectacular. It was nice to wake up on the second day in Denver. There was so much scenery west of Denver. The Rockies are gorgeous! You get a wide...

Dealing with Passengers Unhappy with Community Dining

I actually liked those CCC sideways facing tables. I traveled with two other people last year and was always seated in one of those tables (just the three of us). There was ample room for us, but not for a fourth person. Regarding community seating - I'll be honest, I don't like it. Even...

    Simplified Dining service

On both the CZ and CL in Feb. of this year, they had plastic plates but real silverware. I believe the tablecloths were real too. The food was definitely not pre-plated on either train.

Best Time for Empire Builder Trip

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm leaning toward late March. I'm open to any time of the year -really just want the best chance of being able to ride the train the whole way. I'm exciting to be booking soon! Bedroom prices seem very reasonable for this trip.

Best Time for Empire Builder Trip

I'm planning my second cross country trip for next year. I'm just wondering what the best time of the year is to avoid bustitution or delays/cancellations (given this year's many delays). I was hoping for a winter trip (Feb). Also - what direction do you recommend? I'm going to fly one way...

    Should they make the bed?

I would just make it myself if the SCA is not around. It's not that hard to do (assuming the sheets/blanket on the matress on the top bunk are not left over from the previous passengers in that roomette).

Have Amtrak Seats Ever Been Tested?

These things are really ridiculous in my opinion. People have been sitting in dirty train seats (and airplanes, and movie thwarted, and stadiums, and everything else) for years and years without problems. I guess the person in the article doesn't stay in hotels either.

    CZ Sleepers

The sleepers were on the back when I rode on the CZ last month.

    3 Questions about the CZ

Keep an eye on the Amtrak Status Maps site here: http://www.dixielandsoftware.com/Amtrak/status/StatusMaps/AmtrakStatusMapWest.htm You can keep checking this several days or weeks before you go to get an average delay time. Of course anything can happen when you actually go though. You'll...

    Cross-Country (AE, CL, CZ)

Thanks! On my last several trips on the CL, the dining car crew has not been that great or has been downright aweful. I still like the CL though. You will like the Acela, it's much different than anything else Amtrak offers. I liked first class since they had the 2-1 seating. If I couldn't...

    Cross-Country (AE, CL, CZ)

Thanks everyone. Some of the photos accidentally got cropped to 4x6 size, but they still look ok on that site.

    Cross-Country (AE, CL, CZ)

Thanks! I do like pasta so I was happy with the lasagna. The lunch menu was better than the dinner menu IMO. I was looking at the performance of that train before I left and it doesn't seem that bad. It's seems to have been consistently arriving ontime or early in the recent past. I guess...

    Cross-Country (AE, CL, CZ)

Enjoy the trip! I think I've been pretty lucky in that all the SCAs I've had on Amtrak have been nice.

    Cross-Country (AE, CL, CZ)

I'm trying to see where to put them. I made my "A List" of pictures from the trip already. The scenery was so much that it took me almost a week to sort them all out. Once I get them uploaded, I'll post the link if anyone is interested.

Thanks! You won't be disappointed with the scenery between Denver and Emeryville.

    Cross-Country (AE, CL, CZ)

I saw him, but I didn't go up to him. My seat was facing "his" side of the car. He was only on the train for about 20 minutes.

    Cross-Country (AE, CL, CZ)

Leg #3 - California Zephyr - CHI to EMY After arriving in Chicago on the Capitol Limited, I stayed overnight before continuing west on the California Zephyr. This was my first two-night Amtrak trip so I was very excited for that. I arrived at Union Station about 1-1/2 hours before the train...
