Thanks everyone. I'm planning to go in a roomette. I took the CZ and CL years ago and remember the communal dining, but wasn't sure if things had changed since then.

Thinking about booking a trip on the Coast Starlight this summer. I was wondering about single passengers in the dining car. Do you share a table with other single passengers like in the past, or do you get your own table now? Thank you.

On both the CZ and CL in Feb. of this year, they had plastic plates but real silverware. I believe the tablecloths were real too. The food was definitely not pre-plated on either train.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm leaning toward late March. I'm open to any time of the year -really just want the best chance of being able to ride the train the whole way. I'm exciting to be booking soon! Bedroom prices seem very reasonable for this trip.

I would just make it myself if the SCA is not around. It's not that hard to do (assuming the sheets/blanket on the matress on the top bunk are not left over from the previous passengers in that roomette).

These things are really ridiculous in my opinion. People have been sitting in dirty train seats (and airplanes, and movie thwarted, and stadiums, and everything else) for years and years without problems. I guess the person in the article doesn't stay in hotels either.

The sleepers were on the back when I rode on the CZ last month.

Thanks! I do like pasta so I was happy with the lasagna. The lunch menu was better than the dinner menu IMO. I was looking at the performance of that train before I left and it doesn't seem that bad. It's seems to have been consistently arriving ontime or early in the recent past. I guess...

Enjoy the trip! I think I've been pretty lucky in that all the SCAs I've had on Amtrak have been nice.
