    Roaming about

No problem---the trip has been canceled. I will not be visiting the site anymore. No where did I ever say that I was not taking the advise given. I seem to be getting blamed for everyone elses comments. As to the over sensitive part. Read the entire thread. You people jumped on me like a humgry...

    Roaming about

Ok, people, this is getting a little out of hand here. Spacecadet do not make this a personal attack against me. I did appreciate the answer that you gave. When someone else mentioned the rude part, I was genuinely interested in hearing more about what was "rude". In an attempt to learn more I...

    Roaming about

Over the top dramatization seems to be the theme that the thread has adopted. I was going to ask about acceptable attire, but looking back I sure am glad that I didn't EVEN THINK of bringing that up!!?? Oh, is the color of our carry-on luggage something to be concerned about???

    Roaming about

Ok, so far I have learned---1) Sit only in the bedroom or the lounge. 2) The diner car is only to be used for the times that you are eating. 3) Don't fall asleep in the lounge car. I just hope that if we break any of the sacred rules that we are not aware of, the Amtrak police will have pitty on...

    Roaming about

Ryan, some of the responses that have been given have led me to believe that. This is not personal to anyone---I have been a train enthusiast for a while. I have just reached that stage of life that let's us travel some. I was looking forward to the trip, but it seems that there is some things...

    Roaming about

I am truely sorry for the original question. I really did not know this would turn out to be a volital as it is. In retrospect the better question to have asked was where is a good place to go interact with other riders. I didn't know that sleeper car folks were really expected to stay in the...

    Roaming about

I did not realize that this was a hot button topic. I thought that we may want to meet other folks and interact with people. That was the main reason I was asking about moving about. We were not interested in being a hermits and camping out in the bedroom. I guess we will have to just feel this...

    Roaming about

I'm not quite understanding the "rude" part? Before we go and make a grievous error, please elaborate more on that--

    Roaming about

My wife and I are taking the CZ from SAC-CHI. We have a bedroom booked. My question--other than the lounge car where else can we sit. Can we grab a couple of coach seats if we see they are avvailable? What are out options when not in the bedroom? Thanks--

    Bedroom Buckets on LD Trains

Please forgive me for hijacking a thread, but I am very new to the rail travel. I see the term "bucket" used often, both high, and low referances. Can someone please explain what the "bucket" terminology is all about. Thanks,---

    Help with Wolverine

My ticket on the Wolverine was an after thought. I do not have a "connecting" ticket per-se. I have tickets on the CZ to CHI and tickets on the Wolverine CHI-MIC. Will they still accomodate me it we miss the Wolverine? The lack of checked luggage could be a problem---checking into it

    Help with Wolverine

My wife and I are going to be arriving in CHI on the Zephyr @ a sceduled time of 2:50pm. WE would like to catch the Wolverine #354 from CHI-MCI (Michigan city) departing at 6:00pm same day. Two questions. 1) We will have checked luggage and cary-on from the Zephyr. What is the best way to handle...

    Recommended Dinner Train

Can anyone recommend a fantastic dinner train experiance? Either in the U.S or Canada. An overnight adventure would be even better---

    Load 'Em Up

I am familiar with diesel engines. Most of them are quite content under load against the governor. I am trying to relate this to the aircraft field that I am in. The turbine engines have a max rated power, and a max continuous power rating. The max continuous is typically not signaficantly lower...

    Load 'Em Up

Once again, I am learning how trains operate. On a run such as the California Zypher is there a time that the locomotives are under 100% power? That leads to another question. Can a locomotive run at 100% rated power indefinately, or do they have a duty cycle, so to speak?

    Load 'Em Up

Thanks for all the good info. As I am new to the train world I have a craving for how things work. I was just noticing that in general Amtrak pulls the cars with a much less Locomotive to car ration than freight does. Now I know why. Thanks guys---

    Load 'Em Up

Technical question--I have been watching some Amtrak Videos on U-tube of the CZ. I have noticed that thay do not put many cars behind their locomotives comparitavely speaking. Does anyone know what Amtrak does as far as % of load they put their locomotives under? I may not be asking correctly...

    First Time

I started this thread to ask for ideas for a great first time trip. I have now seen references from clothes pins to duct tape to scanners, to adult activities in the bedrooms. My there is truly a lot to do on these trains----

Ryan, do you have any specific examples of both the Whiz-Bang models and more common model?

    First Time

One more thing---someone mentioned some Radio Shack scanners. I can find the pro-444. Someone with some experiance---if you were going to buy a scanner today which one would you recommend. I am looking for the best VALUE, not necessarly the cheapest.
