Need advice on traveling from Chicago to Redding California

Hello! Next spring we may be taking a trip out to Redding, California from NYC. We have taken multiple trips to the Midwest with Chicago as our end point so we are good on getting there. I understand that Redding is a stop on the Coast Starlight route. I would like some advice on which of the...

    Lower Level Seating

And a light weight blanket (like a travel blanket or light weight fleece) and a "snack bag" for you and the pup in case you do not want to go upstairs. Some hand wipes are nice to have handy too.

    Bedding

At the Ricksteves.com website you will find a "sleeping bag' made of sheeting material. It travels in in its own stuff sack and takes up little room. That and a couple of blow up pillows and maybe two travel blankets, will fit in a small tote. I slept on the bottom bunk of a superliner with my...

    Tea time in sleeping cars????

I think I will skip the water heater for the train travel. While I love convenience, this could be a bit iffy! Worst case I will just have to drink coffee for my caffeine fix.

    Tea time in sleeping cars????

Great idea! I will pick one up. I will watch the font size! I usually find a larger font easier to read myself!

    Tea time in sleeping cars????

I have seen mentions of coffee, juice, and bottled water in the sleeping cars. Do they also provide tea bags and water for tea? Also do they provide 'real' creamers or the powdered stuff. I, of course, am not picky but my traveling companions are! Also we get on the Texas Eagle at 1:45 pm and at...

BEWARE: Service advisory for Chicago/St. Louis Trains

I'm glad there is such a positive purpose!

BEWARE: Service advisory for Chicago/St. Louis Trains

Thanks for the heads up. I think we will do that next time if my hubby's leg is better. The only option Amtrak gave us was to use the buses they were supplying or to keep the roomettes I jumped on when I found out about this. The representative was very courteous and very nice. But as she...

BEWARE: Service advisory for Chicago/St. Louis Trains

Thanks Togdor. The representative I got told me that 321 and 322 were canceled and we would be on buses instead. I am going to work with customer relations today and try to get this mess straight. I do feel a bit better knowing that this advisory was recent!

BEWARE: Service advisory for Chicago/St. Louis Trains

Alan, I took your advice and booked us in on 21 and 22. They were the only Texas Eagles showing on the web site for our travel dates. My husband is healing from leg surgery and the more I thought about it, the more worried I became about him being stuck on a bus. The only space available was...

BEWARE: Service advisory for Chicago/St. Louis Trains

Actually I had double -booked that leg and I also had a reservation on the 321 in case we missed the 303 with the Capitol being late. Apparently there is an issue with that one too!

BEWARE: Service advisory for Chicago/St. Louis Trains

I was planning to go pick up my train tickets this Friday for our train trip starting next Thursday. I booked a Lincoln service (303) to St. Louis after getting off the Capitol Limited on the 16th and Texas Eagle (322) back to the Capitol Limited on the 22nd. I bought these tickets back in...

Need some advice please on changing a reservation.

I lucked out and got a nice agent. The cost did go up due to traveling farther on the Capitol Limited, BUT it was less than the fare I paid going out to Chicago on it. When I originally was booking this, the trip back was more expensive than going out . Therefore we decided to get off in...

Need some advice please on changing a reservation.

Thanks folks! I am hoping, as Amtrak changed the drop off time into Pittsburgh, they will have mercy on me. I do expect to pay more than I am now, the question is just how much based on my current low bucket.

Need some advice please on changing a reservation.

I figured I might be SOL on this. I was halfway thinking of trying to change it on the train with the conductor as I did not think anyone would want to book our room from Pittsburgh to Newark. I don't want unknowns though so I will bite the bullet and change it later on. Hopefully I will get...

Need some advice please on changing a reservation.

We are traveling in July from Chicago to Newark. Originally we were going to take the Capitol Limited to Pittsburgh and switch to the Pennsylvanian to go to Newark. But our "almost a teenager" grandchild is joining us. But with the changed schedule, I don't think lurking around Pittsburgh...

    Bedbugs?

I would expect them to be anyplace where luggage is that may have been in a hotel before entering the train. Planes, buses, and trains!
