    Scariest points on Amtrak

I rode the Lake Shore to New York a couple of years ago. Shortly before we got to Penn Station we went through a sort of trough. The train was late and it was dark but it looked like we were well below street level but not in a tunnel. It was piled high with refuse and just had an evil look...

Never Give A Sucker An Even Break

Fields and his native American sidekick flag down a train in the middle of no where. Fields asks the conductor if there is a private Pullman car available with full bath and stocked bar. The conductor replies that all they have is a crowded day coach. To which Fields replys, "Drat." How many...

    Railroad Physics

This is all good stuff thank you very much. Let me ask the question another way. Would there be different (theoretical) limits to the speed and consist size for the Surfliner going the same way over the same track when it is pushed vs pulled?

    Railroad Physics

I knew I was coming to the right place. Let's keep it simple. All things equal, can you pull more cars than you can push?

    Railroad Physics

My brother, who thinks he knows everything, and I were riding a Surfliner that was being pushed from Camarillo to Los Angeles. Since I have more RR experience than he, he asked me, what is the limit to the speed and the number of cars for a train being pushed vs one being pulled. He seemed to...

    Metrolink Wreck

In the accounts I have read, the MetroLink engineer had worked for Amtrak for 10 years. But it sounded like he was working for a contractor who provides engineers to MetroLink. Is that right? And if so, why doesn't MetroLink employ its own engineers?

    Attendant wake Up Knock

Which reminds me of my favorite railroad joke. A man gets on the Capitol Ltd in Chicago and tells the sleeping car attendant, “I am going to Pittsburgh for a very important meeting. I am a very sound sleeper so I want you to make sure I get off in Pittsburgh. I will go ahead and give you a...

    #7,8 WARM ENOUGH?

The only time I was on the Empire Builder was on the old equipment in the dead of winter back in the early 70's. I was very comfortable and even got kind of a thrill the first time I sat down and discovered they ran hot water through the toilets. Ahhhh.

    Dessert Wind

The thing I remember about the Desert Wind was the large hobo jungle it went through on the west side of Las Vegas. It was quite a contrast to all of the big hotels and glitter.

    Starlate Bashing

I don't know anything about dispatching trains, freight or passenger. But yes I think freight trains ought to wait for passenger trains. Is another couple of hours going to make any difference for a bunch stuff that has already taken a couple of weeks or so to get here from China? And if...

slow trains are useless and no fun

I agree completely with Darst in the original post. It is great that NARP is calling for some action from our government. What I wonder is, who is Amtrak complaining to and how much are they trying to have the federal laws referred to enforced. Shouldn't that be someone's job at Amtrak? I...
