Hello

I have a return trip back home and have 2 bedrooms on 2 traims and i got email stating my reservation was changed to a roomette. How can they just do that? is it overbooked and just the unlucky one? the refund is nice but i kinda fell i was cheated out somehow. I guess they could told me that i was in a coach seat and not a roomette. I guess i wish they would give a reason why.

What train? Were you moved to different car?

Sounds like you were moved to another car because your car is being removed. They probably moved bedroom people to the other car before moving roomette people, so be glad there was a roomette available in the other car.

You got lucky (I'm being sarcastic).

Last year I made 2 trips from the UK to ride Amtrak and for both journeys my Bedroom reservations were downgraded to Coach just a week or so before I was due to fly !!

(I managed to "partially rescue" both my vacations by effectively bagging last available Roomettes on different routes from the west through to Chicago).

Oops lol. Yes it is 9812 roomette when i had a 9811. I have the 49 back to chicago. never been on the lake shore limited

That is crazy. I wouldn't want the coach for 2 days. I usually put a buffer on my trips in case I'm late or need to make other arrangements.

When are you traveling? How many days before departure was it changed?

Just to recap to see we are on the same page...

Your itinerary is somewhere to NYP on 98, and then NYP - CHI on 49.

You had a bedroom in 9811 and you got moved to a Roomette in 9812. No change to your accommodation on train 49.

Is that accurate? Thanks.

Oops. I had done a quick Google search which showed 98 as "Silver Service/Palmetto" for some reason. Anyway that doesn't go to Chicago either. 🥴
The Atlantic Coast Route is often identified as Silver Service/Palmetto in what IMHO is a somewhat confusing nomenclature.

That's odd. If 9811 is deleted, they're dropping the VL I instead of subbing a VL II, and I thought MIA always had VL spares.

I hope Amtrak is not cutting 97/98 back to 2 sleepers again. I have an H-room booked on 9711 in May, and H-rooms are sold out on the train. No changes showing to my ressie on the app so far.

I am not sure 9811 is deleted. That is a collective AU assumption at present. Actually we don't know why the change was made.

It is the continuation of a pattern of removing sleepers with sold inventory due to lack of serviceable equipment that has gone on for two years. Removing sleepers with sold accommodations has already hit the Builder, Zephyr and SW Chief. The Zephyr has seen it more than once.

My advice to only accept bookings in "base" sleepers now extends to eastern trains, although I am not as familiar with the car lines in the east. The only one I can say for certain is the 4811/4911 car line is the base sleeper on the New York section of the Lake Shore.

The fact that this situation has gone on for two years and continues to happen speaks for itself regarding Amtrak management.

And we're not even into the summer travel season yet!

If you are on the silver and it is a slam dunk that you will miss the connection (something to confirm with the conductor), it might be something best handled early over the phone. If you hop off without any arrangements, you run the serious risk of the Cap being sold out for your type of accommodation. Not to mention handling the cancellation/credit issues on the Lake leg.

My guess is your original car was bad ordered (needed to be removed for repairs). I do know that 98(24) left Miami late due to 97(22) arriving late and the crew needing to rest. 97(22) was caught up in the north NJ shutdown due to brush fire.
