Pere Marquette line gives students a way to get to the Windy City
Students and citizens traveling by rail in the Grand Rapids area can expect to have secure access to routes for at least another year.
Amtrak, the national train service funded by the federal government, will continue to run routes through Michigan despite continuing concerns about budget cuts, said Jim Snell, chairman of the WesTrain Coalition and senior transportation planner of the Grand Valley Metropolitan Council.
The council, a publicly-funded land and transportation-planning agency of government leaders, serves West Michigan. WesTrain is an unofficial entity that oversees train stations on the west side of the state.
The Grand Rapids Amtrak Station, located at the intersection of Wealthy and Market streets, offers services to and from Chicago via the Pere Marquette Line, which is one of three major routes covering the state of Michigan. Detroit is the primary artery of transportation, with the Wolverine line, while Port Huron’s station provides service to the thumb area through the Blue Water line.
The budget for Michigan’s Amtrak services has been under review since the 2003 fiscal year. The budget, proposed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, stands at $7.1 million. However, the State House of Representatives has removed $900,000 from the budget.
