Amtrak passenger train, truck collision kills 4 in Roseland

Train en route from New Orleans

Advocate staff report

ROSELAND - A man and three children were killed when an Amtrak passenger train slammed into their pickup truck at an unmarked railroad crossing in Roseland Sunday afternoon, the police chief said.

Chris Crowe, 31, of Tickfaw was driving west on Tangipahoa Avenue, and the train was headed north from New Orleans, said Roseland Police Chief Tommy Cutrer.

The train collided with the truck around 3:30 p.m. at the crossing, which has stop signs but no crossing signal for trains, Cutrer said.

Crowe's passengers were his children, Kaleb Crowe, 8, and Christina Crowe, 6, both of Tickfaw, and his girlfriend's daughter, Megan Bennett, 12 of Roseland.

Bennett's mother, Peggy McCormick, followed the truck and witnessed the crash, Cutrer said. Investigators had not interviewed her Sunday evening because she was too distressed to talk, Cutrer said.

The impact of the train destroyed the truck, and the four were pronounced dead at the scene, Cutrer said. The truck was pushed a few hundred yards down the track, and Bennett was thrown from the truck, Cutrer said.

Authorities detained the train for about an hour and a half, Cutrer said. About 10 years ago, two young people were killed at the same crossing, Cutrer said. The need for a signal at the crossing has been debated by officials in the town of 1,500 people.

Louisiana has long been among the top five states in the number of accidents at rail crossings and the top 15 for the number of deaths at rail crossings, the Associated Press reported. That's the case even though 20 states have more people and 22 have more people per square mile of land.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
