Bush threatens Amtrak -- the freeway alternative

There are scores of ways in and out of Royal Oak, but only one is guaranteed to avoid around-the-clock construction, potholes and rush hour gridlock. It's the government-operated Amtrak train, which stops in Royal Oak thrice daily at the "station" - an unmanned, open-ended booth - just west of the Post Office downtown.

The train is also safer and less stressful than driving, and it's harder for travelers to get lost. And believe it or not, as I discovered recently when on a whim I took the 20-minute train ride from Detroit to Royal Oak, the seats are comfortable.

But Amtrak is threatened. President George W. Bush's proposed budget for fiscal year 2006 provides zero dollars for Amtrak.

That's odd, because people are taking the easy way out in droves. Amtrak riders boarding or getting off in Royal Oak totaled 17,575 in 2004. That's up from 11,954 the previous year.
