Save Our Trains Michigan
Conductor
I learned this evening that a 180 day discontinuance notice will not
be issued for the Heartland Flyer and that word of discontinuance
will likely be issued sometime following the completion of the 2005
legislative session. This will be too late for the state to save the
passenger train. This is despite what PassengerRailOk.org had been
told in September by those who are responsible for the management of
the Heartland Flyer.
The PassengerRailOk.org board is highly disappointed with this
decision. It will likely mean a quiet death for the popular
passenger train as legislators will be out-of-the-office for an
extended period of time before and after the discontinuance.
Although PassengerRailOk.org will keep the public informed about any
demonstration, protest, or public rally, we will not play a major
role in organizing the series of rallies that were in their early
planning stages. That is unless of course the discontinuance notice
issuance date does occur during the Legislative session.
PassengerRailOk.org will expend its energies in other ways to keep
the public will on the mind of legislative leaders.
Issuance of the discontinuance notice was seen as key to making a
statement with the legislature. This would have allowed the public a
forum to vent their frustration with state legislative decision
makers on the steps of the capitol.
It is expected that the issuance will occur sometime between May 27th
and September 1st. Discontinuance will likely occur on September
30th or October 1st, the end of the Amtrak 2005 fiscal year.
We regret that ODOT and Amtrak have come to this decision. We do not
feel that it is in the public interest and see it as yet another
attempt to isolate the public from the decision making process.
