least crowded/least expensive time to travel

What months and days of the year are amtrak trains the least crowded and the least expensive?

I am thinking of a long distance trip from the east coast to the west coast.

I need advice folks.

What do you think of the train pass?

Easiest way to find out is to go to www.amtrak.com and try various dates. The earlier you make reservations the lower the rate.

Two factors I have often tried to keep in mind is that the weather is usually more pleasant in the Spring or Fall. Also, traveling at a time kids would be in school usually makes things more pleasant.

The crowding also seems to depend on the train. I can usually get a slepper on short notice on the Texas Eagle, but seldom can get one on the Coast Starlight, the Southwest Chief, or the Califirnia Zephyr. But you never know.
