House can't get enough support for budget cuts

March 31, 2004, 12:25 AM

Rep. Leon Drolet, a Republican from Macomb County's Clinton Township, proposed a number of spending cuts Tuesday, including one to eliminate the state's $7.1 million subsidy for Amtrak's passenger lines in Michigan. It failed to win enough support to change the transportation budget.

This person almost won last year in getting rid of State money for Michigan Amtrak service and remember with the change of the International to the Blue Water if there is a drop in ridership were in big trouble. If you live in Michigan please call your State Reps and tell them to support Amtrak service in Michigan.

Michigan is in real danger of losing the Pere Marquette and Blue water trains.House Bill 267 sec 805 states that Amtrak can't lower fares below what Greyhound and Indian Trails sells tickets for. This silly HB could hurt ridership which means it could be harder to get funding for 2005.People if you don't speak up we will end up losing both the Pere Marquette and Blue Water trains.

To NARP Members in Michigan, March 31, 2004--

At the behest of bus company Indian Trails, Inc., State Sen. Shirley Johnson (R-Royal Oak), who chairs the appropriations committee, is today introducing a provision which would prohibit Amtrak from ever charging a fare below what is charged by any private entity participating in the state's bus loan program.

While many fares Amtrak charges are more expensive than bus fares, this provision would limit Amtrak's ability to set fares, particularly in regards to special discounts (such as those for seniors, children and NARP members). Amtrak believes the provision would reduce its ridership and revenues and thus increase what the State of Michigan must pay Amtrak for the train. This amendment also could give legislators elsewhere bad ideas about micromanaging Amtrak.

"Any state subsidy for rail passenger service between Port Huron and Chicago shall not be used to artifically reduce passenger fares by a private entity participating in the Intercity Bus Loan Program." Indian Trails does not serve Durand, Lapeer or Port Huron. It does serve Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, so this amendment also raises the possibility that Amtrak might have to charge different fares on the "Blue Water" and on the Detroit trains in markets common to both routes.

Please contact your state legislator immediately and urge them to work against any such provision. We understand that, if this provision gets anywhere, Senator Mark Schauer (D-Battle Creek) will introduce language to strike it. Re: Amtrak loyalists, April 5 Local & State

To the editor:

“Save our Trains” has the right idea. Our community truly needs Amtrak’s passenger rail service as it now exists: The International connecting East Lansing and other Michigan cities with both Chicago and Toronto.

Contrary to what has been published, it isn’t only Customs/Immigration at Port Huron that causes delays. It is freight traffic, which takes precedence over passenger trains, and equipment failures. Eastbound trains are consistently late arriving in East Lansing from Chicago for those reasons.

The announced schedule for the new Blue Water will pose a hardship for many people and likely lead to further reduced passenger numbers. The current mid-afternoon arrival time of both International trains at East Lansing is convenient and safe for people traveling and those meeting them. Come winter, it will be dark in early morning and late evening, making for more hazardous driving.

Visit the station any Friday afternoon, and you’ll find it crowded with students and others going in both directions. For many, Amtrak is the only way to go.

In other words, I fear that elimination of the International and introduction of the Blue Water will spell the beginning of the end for passenger rail service in Mid-Michigan. What a shame that would be.

Respectfully,

JeAnne Ingersol
