I realize there was a lot of damage to the right-of-way caused by the not-so-recent storms. No passenger trains have passed through beautiful downtown Santa Barbara since early last month. UP has been operating freights through here at increasing frequencies and increasing speeds.

Have there been any updates as to when Amtrak service to this area will be restored?

Pacific Surfliner service south of Goleta is scheduled to resume on February 8.

Pacific Surfliner service between San Luis Obispo and Goleta is scheduled to resume on February 28.

Coast Starlight service between Emeryville and Los Angeles-Union Station is scheduled to resume on February 28.

All LAX-SBA service resumes monday 2/7 except 774 and 768. Apparently they will not deadhead equipment north, so those 2 resume 2/8. 798/799 will not serve Goleta (presumably they will hold train over in old Amtrak spur in SBA since Goleta spur is tied up with 763 layover.). Further announcements will be made 'in the near future' for SBA-SLO and SLO-SJC.

Here's a recent official report from Amtrak which details the plan for resuming service on the Surfliners, beginning tomorrow:

Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner Update, February 4, 2005

Union Pacific forces continue to assess work required, and progress made to return the railroad to service between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo.

Today, February 4, 2005, Union Pacific advises that Amtrak can resume operating on Monday, February 7, 2005 between Los Angeles and Goleta, 1 day earlier than previously projected. As information, the Union Pacific advises that on February 16, 2005, better information will be available on service restoration between Goleta and San Luis Obispo. The Coast Starlight will continue the current operation between Seattle and Emeryville until rail service is restored between San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles.

Pacific Surfliner Service

On Monday, February 7, 2005, Amtrak will resume rail operation between Los Angeles and Goleta. Rail operation between Goleta and San Luis Obispo is cancelled, with the current estimate for rail service restoration between Goleta and San Luis Obispo being February 28, 2005.

Amtrak, partnering with the State of California, will restore service between and Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo via throughway motor-coach connection on February 7, 2005.

The following is the operating plan north of Los Angeles beginning Monday, February 7, 2005:

• Trains 763, 784, 769, 796 and 785 resume normal operation.

• Train 774(7) will originate in Los Angeles, with motor-coach connections from San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach, Santa Maria, Goleta, Santa Barbara, Oxnard and Van Nuys. This is the current connecting bus service. Note: on February 8, 2005, Train 774 resumes rail operation from Goleta, as outlined below.

• Train 768(7) will originate in Los Angeles, with motor-coach connections from Goleta, Santa Barbara, Oxnard and Van Nuys. This is the current connecting bus service. Note: On February 8, 2005, Train 768(8) resumes normal operation.

• Trains 799(7) and 798(7) will resume rail operation between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, with throughway motor coach connections between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Note – Goleta will not be served by either rail or motor-coach service on the schedule of 799 of 798 until rail service is restored to San Luis Obispo, which is currently expected on February 28, 2005.

Beginning on February 7, service between San Diego and San Luis Obispo will be as follows:

• Train 775(7) operates through Los Angeles to Goleta, with a throughway bus connection at Santa Barbara to transport passengers between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, making all stops except Goleta. This throughway bus connection will not stop in Goleta. Passengers traveling to Goleta will remain on Train 775 beginning February 7. 2005. Passengers wishing to travel from Goleta to points north will be directed to Santa Barbara for the connecting bus service. This connecting bus will remain intact until rail service is restored to San Luis Obispo, currently expected on February 28, 2005.

• Beginning February 8, 2005 Train 774(8) originates in Goleta, with a throughway bus connection transporting passengers between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, making all stops except Goleta. This bus will connect with train 774 at Santa Barbara. This bus will not stop in Goleta. Passengers traveling from Goleta will board Train 774 equipment. Passengers wishing to travel from points north to Goleta will be directed to Santa Barbara as an alternate destination. This connecting bus will remain intact until rail service is restored to San Luis Obispo, currently expected on February 28, 2005.

According to Amtrak's website, the first four northbound Pacific Surfliners arrived in Santa Barbara as follows:

799 0:15 late

763 1:01 late

769 1:04 late

775 0:22 late

I can deal easily with delays averaging less than one hour, and that's not too shabby, considering the massive amount of flood-related damage to the right-of-way.

Now I can plan for my long-delayed trip to San Diego. Of course, you can expect a very detailed trip report when I return.
