The following is a legislative action alert from NARP, the National

To NARP Members, Friday, October 14, 2005--
The Transportation/Treasury/HUD appropriations bill is expected to be on
the Senate floor Monday, October 17.
Our top priorities remain
[a] eliminating the damaging, micro-managing language about food service
and sleeping cars; and
preserving the $1.45 billion for Amtrak in the Senate committee's
bill.
Please ask your senators to work towards these objectives, and to be
prepared work and vote against "anti-Amtrak" amendments such as funding
reductions, and to work and vote for "pro-Amtrak" amendments such as
modification or elimination of food/sleeper language.
Regarding that language, you can note that S.1516 addresses the on-board
services issues in a more appropriate way--and that the authorization
bill is the better place for these issues to be addressed. S.1516 was
approved July 28 by the Commerce, Science and Transportation bill with
bipartisan support from the committee's leadership.
