The Ghost Trains

Hi, Having only discovered the joys of Amtrak in the last year or so (I am from UK), I gather that the Long Distance trains face a total shut down some time soon. As a "foreigner", I dont know how funding issues work in America, and I can't sort out a clear picture of when services will cease, or if indeed it is all a certainty?

I would like to ride a few more of the classic trains before they become ghosts...Is there a known latest date which is still safe to book for the Empire Builder ?

September 30 would be an early guess. But this is assuming that the budget is passed by then. Many times it's not passed until November so the current funding level remains until the solidified budget is passed.
