For the first time since 1964, streetcars will be plying the route on Canal Street (one of New Orleans' major streets) from the riverfront downtown all the way to the end of the street at the cemetaries. A 1-mile spur line will connect Canal Street with the entrance to City Park. Needless to say, everyone's real excited about this, as it's expected to give parts of the street a "shot in the arm" so to speak. Both locals and tourists are expected to frequent this line.
This new service will run 24/7, with peak service every six minutes and a little less during off peak times. The brand new fleet of streetcars are desgined like the former streetcars, but unlike their ancestors, all the new cars will be ADA complient and will feature air conditioning.
