I'm watching it now in KS; the show looks pretty good although the train part isn't all that exciting. Double decker high speed train, basic CGI with route from SF to LAX. Interesting enough show, it got a good review in this week's Entertainment Weekly magazine.

I like how they call it a monorail and then it turns out to be a train on conventional tracks! Apparently it was a 220 mph diesel powered train (or maybe it was a gas turbine ;) ) and the new high speed line was single track! The absurdities just got worse from there...

Why is it so hard to make a good thriller movie that takes place on a train? Is it because trains have so much safety equipment and rules that filmmakers have to bend rules of logic, science, math and who knows-what-else to create an exciting movie?

I thought Runaway Train was pretty good. Maybe it had technical flaws that I don't recall. They did stuff that dispatcher into a toilet bowl! That looked pretty real!

That and Jon Voight's acting was impressive.

"Under Siege 2: Dark Territory" was enjoyable, but flawed. Question: After going to all the trouble to shoot the opening scenes at Denver's Union Station, why did the filmmakers decide to use SFX to add ceiling supports and poles in the waiting room?

It couldn't possibly be worse than Supertrain.
How bad was Atomic Train?
well

1.brake fluid leaking from air hoses lol

2. brake lines came disconnected making the train a runaway cause no brakes.

thats what i know what do you know.
Only to avoid it at all costs.

Here's a list of goofs at IMDB. Too many to list here.

IMO the worst one; "During the entire film, many different attempts to prevent a nuclear disaster where attempted. One thing they didn't attempt, was to simply disconnect the box car."

Ooo, I want to see a movie about this;

Hey, this might be work for those drivers who think it's ok to drive around crossing arms.

It just ran on the west coast. As to the realism of the train, tracks, etc., I won't even go into the multitudinous details there. Enjoy it as a ground based science fiction adventure.

A few commnets:

The train seemed to be based on the Amtrk California cars with a lavish interior and aerodynamic front end. Doors looked a little like somebody had seen the Shinkansen.

Baggage car on a high speed train???

Nice ballasted single track?? Real will most likely be double track and concrete based.

No source of power. No diesel exhaust, no engine, no overhead electric wire, no third rail.

Curves not possible for the speeds.

Tunnel looks like a subway box structure.

Brake issues completely impossible.

Did we get hints of a road grade crossing at one point??

Somebody must have at least read some of the California High Speed Train web site.

200 mph speed mentioned: 220 mph is CAHST max speed.

3 hours SF to LA: 2 hr 42 min frequently mentioned as a legislative directive.

$80 billion! Maybe in the range of the real.

Construction time: Regardless of what is on the official schedule, I would be inclined to say that anything less than 15 years from now would be incredibly optomistic.

Japanese participation is very reasonable to expect given that they:

1. have money to invest

2. have the largest in milage, longest time in operation and highest passenger volume high speed rail system in the world. They also in all this time had no fatalities and only one derailment and that one in an earthquake.

Well I won't be watching that any more. Done on the cheap, terrible effects, poor acting, not to speak of all the points George H made.

Best part was that bacon hanging on the wall.

Hey don't blame the filmmaker, blame the writers, and advertisers. I have even worked a couple of good pilots that did not sell in my career.

Some of my friends worked the 5-0 movie with Gary Bussey, the Studio never showed to anyone.

My personal fav of the whole show is this -- why not shut the throttle down - they weren't - like - GOING DOWNHILL ALL THE WAY TO LA!!! Plus what are the odds that a "parachute" setup would slow you enough jumping from a fast train landing on ballasted track so you wouldn't be sushi when you landed? (Bonus points for how the guy landed on the lady when they hit the ground -- you can quit covering her bub, the danger is below not above).

One big duh of a rating. Will have to see what sort of letters Entertainment Weekly gets for recommending this turkey on rails.

Remember - this show only has this one episode on the train. Next week it will be something entirely different plot wise.
