I just had lunch in the Pacific Parlour Car on the Coast Starlight, and the desserts seem to have changed again. The attendant confirmed that the menu has changed on schedule after six months. I had the chocolate cake; it was a mini Bundt cake with sauce similar to the one that we used to get. Very good. My table mate had cheesecake, round and obviously from a single serving cup, but definitely not the version we've been getting of late. The gelato and sorbet were also offered. Seems to be an improvement.

thanks for the info Charlie. I love the mini Bundt cake.

Cheesecakes are being phased over to single-serve portions versus the slices to reduce spoilage/waste. Ice creams and sorbet were changed over to Ciao Bella after Haagen-Dazs discontinued making the small single-serve cups, even for the supermarkets.

On the 12/16 RNO-CHI (CZ), wife had cheesecake and I had the Bundt cake with vanilla bean ice cream and both were good. On 12/18 CHI-WAS(CL) wife cheesecake again but I had the 3 flavor mousse which was very good also. Like the dessert changes.

Charlie, we're on a long trip with four different LD trains. So far, had the cheesecake, Ciao Bella blood-orange sorbet, and vanilla-bean gelato on every train. The EB and CS had the bundt cake (sometimes heated so the cake is soft & sauce is very runny, but served room-temp on #14). The CL and SL had the three-layer chocolate mousse with chocolate curls on top. Everything has been very good.

I love the single-serving cheesecake. It's the perfect size.

I meant the little round ones vs the bigger slices they used to serve.

Based on what I'm reading... Nothing has changed correct?

Chocolatte Mouse

The round cheesecake

The round chocolate bundt cake

Blood Orange Sorbet

Vanilla Bean Gelato

Sugar Free Pudding

These are the current desserts in rotation correct? It's been that way since this summer from what I've seen.

(From my many taste tests my favorite by far is the mousse!)

IMO, the deserts have always been satisfactory. Usually try to keep to the Sorbet or Gelato. IIRC a few years ago you were offered ice cream with your cake. Perhaps the outfit is getting stingy on the treats, or someone believes this cut back will now make the dining cars profitable. Will the cokes be next?

What cokes? They carry Pepsi. Now, if you mean, will they switch to Coke, many of us here on AU would not complain at all.

The mousse is gone from the CS selections. Which is too bad, as it was one of my favorites.
Just because the mousse wasn't available on your train doesn't mean it's "gone" - the mousse and chocolate cake seem to be an "either / or" of those selections.

Maybe, although our PPC attendant said that it was no longer available, at least on the CS.

Betty: Remember Sarah Z mentioning that her BF called all Sodas "Coke"? It's a "Southern Thing!" And I wish Amtrak would Replace Pepsi with Coke Myself! ;)

I was replying to post #3 - sorry!
It's been communicated that the recipe was converted to a single pack dessert which is overwraped to ensure integrity and to reduce waste due to its individual packing. Cheesecakes are by Love and Quiches Gourmet.

Definitely a Southern thing. This RVR born and bred calls everything Coke, further south you get it's "co-cola" I wish Coke was on board as well.

Well, of course southerners would call them Coke - it's the REAL THING. :giggle:

It used to be the real thing, now it they would really go back I would prefer Coke, until then it is Pepsi for me.

Aloha

Amtrak is almost a Pepsi enclave. You can get coke aboard the ML while it is in Canada. (OK, at that point it's officially a VIA train!) You can also buy a Coke aboard the Downeaster. (They have a different contract and offer Coke but not Pepsi.)
