Hi,

can anyone confirm if pittsburgh station has left luggage facilities or lockers please? The station info on the amtrak site seems to say it does and it doesn't!!

if so - Does anyone know the cost?

thanks

If no one else answers before tomorrow, I'll walk over to the station in the morning and ask. My office is across the street.

I don't think there are any lockers there either, but there is a Greyhound bus station right across the street. They may have some.

As others have mentioned, there are not lockers. However, a few years ago (maybe 2009) I was able to leave a couple bags at the luggage counter for the day. I can't recall exactly, but I think I dropped off bags midday and retrieved them before boarding the Capitol Limited around midnight.

No lockers. But when 43 (the Pennsy) unloaded, they opened up the gate to the baggage area and let people either check stuff for 29 (the Cap) or gave them a slip to pick it up at 11:30 and carry it on with them.

The guy working the bag area was rather friendly that particular Saturday night, so if you want them to hold it longer, you could at least ask, although I doubt they would hold it any longer than 24 hours without charging you (per Amtrak policy).

Edit: as soon as I posted that, I got a flash of an image of lockers over by the bathrooms. So now I don't know. If they are there though, they're quite small.

I did something similar in 2008. I'm not sure if it was an official service though or just the staff being helpful.

Ok, well there is something major going down at work today and I don't think I'll be able to walk over. If I can get out at lunchtime, I will.

presumably with the left luggage room, I'll be able to leave my bags in the morning, and pick em up before the midnight departure? Just wanting to save an extra trip to the hotel after my day at kennywood..

Anyone know how much it costs?

From 8-11:30 pm it was free, but that was really just for people connecting from the Pennsy. If you do decide to try and have them hold it at the station, remember that the eastbound Pennsy leaves around 7 am, and the station probably isn't staffed after that until the westbound Pennsy pulls in at around 7:30 pm.

Should I take the Penn/CL home to Indy later this year I will have about a 4 hour layover (8pm-12am) in Pittsburgh and was wondering where is the station located is there anywhere close to walk to get something to eat or do?

I mapquested and see that from the train station down to Pramantis is less then a mile walk. My question is how safe of a walk is it as I would love to grab a sandwhich there and with possibly 4 hours to kill I think I would have enough time to make that walk, even with my luggage.

The area is probably fine, but when I was there it was St. Patrick's Day so I decided to just huddle in the station and order delivery. They have a box of menus from local pizza/pasta places, and it's all pretty reasonable.

I think the Pennsy is a nice day train, but if you want to budget your time and sleep well, you're better off on the Cap from WAS.

Of course, someone is going to tell you to take a Cardinal and bypass PGH altogether, which I wouldn't disagree with either!

I am taking the Cardinal out and I want to spend a day in Chicago which the Cardinal woulnd't permit sorta. Plus the chance to get a true PItts legend sandwhich is hard to pass up.

Pgh station is staffed 24/7.

I walk to where Primaniti's is all the time. You'll be fine. I think left luggage is free as long as you're a ticketed passenger.

I don't know how much the per piece charge is: it ranges from $1 to $5 around the system, higher if a private contractor is involved (DC). But... you can check (for free) any bags you don't need aboard the train with you, at any time of day or night, and even a day or two prior to your trip. So, if you just keep one bag for the train, the most they will charge you is $5, and I doubt that PGH is that high.

If I can leave my bag at the station while waiting for the CL that would be great, as it would make the walk down to the diner and back much easier. I also see the Pirates are playing that night so the town should be lit up...

I apologize for bumping this thread, but does Amtrak still offer baggage storage at this station? If so for what hours? This summer I'm taking the Pennsylvanian to Pittsburgh on Saturday, spending the night, and taking the Capitol Limited to Chicago Sunday night at 11:59pm.

Last I knew it did and the Amtrak website says so. Presuming that is credible.

The walk from the Amtrak station to Primanti's goes through the "Strip District," which is being reimagined from warehouses to upgraded retail, office, and residential properties. I'd say it's relatively safe, as there are a few nightlife venues here and there so it's not deserted at night. Some parts of the walk may not be as well-lit as downtown proper. If in doubt a cab or Uber/Lyft wouldn't be that expensive as it's a short ride.

Considering the Penns. had checked baggage added, and this is its terminal, It makes sense to have storage, since bags would need to handled off that train, and when the CL comes in on/off that train.
