I agree with Amtrak. I have learned to NEVER take the Sunset Ltd going east. I do take it going from NOL to LAX. Whenever I go to ATL now, I always take the Chief to CHO then the City of New Orleans.
;)
I enjoy sitting with others. I always travel alone and if I don't want to mingle, I simple stay in my room.
I've met some folks who were interesting and others who were not so interesting.
I must say though, that when I say that others are not interesting, I have to catch myself. It's so very...
I must say that the idea of travelling only during the day appeals to me when you are travelling through beautiful country that you miss while sleeping and it's dark out. :D
I saw a segment on the American Oriental Express the other day and it looked like it had AMTRAK engines. Is this run by Amtrak?
Anyhow I was thinking about taking one of their tours but they are PRICEY.
Depending on the accomodations they can run from about $2800.00 to over $6000.00 for an...
The last few times I've been in NO, I have stayed twice at the Holiday Inn Express at 231 Carondelet. I also stayed at the Hilton on Poydras. The Holiday inn runs about $80.00 through Hotels.com. The Hilton was $106.00 through Hotels.com.
I prefer the Holiday Inn. The rooms are very clean and...
Well my room numbers are as follows:
Southwest Chief Room#004 Car#0431
City of NO Room#006 Car#5900
Sunset Ltd Room#004 Car#0131
Is that good or bad? :(
Hello all.
I just booked my Christmas vacation on Amtrak :) .
However I had a heck of a time doing it on the internet. This time instead of taking the Sunset LTD both ways, I'm taking the SW Chief to Chicago then the City of NO to New Orleans. Then the Crescent to Atlanta. After that I'll...
Since this is such a great board with such savvy train folks I know someone here can answer a question that I've been wondering about.
I know that during peak travel times (Thanksgiving and Christmas for example) it's often hard to get a sleeper if you wait until the last minute to book.
Does...
I have given up on the Sunset being on time. I tell everyone that the train is a great trip but if you've GOT to be there on time, do NOT take the Sunset Ltd.
I took it to NO in December and got into the station 6 hours late. I was ticked off because I had already paid for a hotel room which I...
Thanks everyone. You all are always so helpful to us relatively new train riders. I am planning to take the Sunset back to Los Angeles. I have been on the Sunset a couple of times so this time I wanted to try another route.
And believe it or not, it's not all that expensive. Not cheap but heck...
This winter I will have a six week period in which to do some train riding. I am going from Los Angeles to Atlanta but instead of taking the Sunset Ltd, this time I want to take the train that goes from LA to Chicago and then to New Orleans (the Chief?)
Can anyone tell me what the scenery is...
My $.02 worth.
The NO station is tied in with the Greyhound station and it does stay open 24 hours. There is a police substation there (at least there was when I went through in December and January).
Taxi rides to all hotels in the downtown area is $10.00. That fare is set by the city...
