I last rode the Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle in 1995, they switched the cars in San Antonio in the middle of the night, and you hardly knew you were on a different train when you woke up in the morning. So everything went as planned when I rode it.

If they could have gotten Mexico to pay for some of the costs, then maybe it would have been easier for them to implement. But how many people (regular people, I mean), would ride a train there? It would certainly have been interesting though. :)

Someone told me that the Texas Eagle route was once longer, and ran from Chicago to Laredo, Texas, on the Mexican border, instead of ending in San Antonio as it currently does. I haven't seen anything about this on any Amtrak websites, does anyone remember this? Why was the route shortened?

I'm no expert, but I did take an Amtrak bus from the Ferry Building to Emeryville to transfer to the Coast Starlight once, so I may be able to help. I believe that the ferry building station is staffed. I'm not sure if there is a pay phone there, but it is likely because it's in a fairly busy...
