From NPR - "Amtrak fights big oil for the use of the rails"

I haven't posted here in ages (not that I ever posted here very much in the first place) but I saw this story on the NPR site and came here, where I didn't see any mention of it. Sorry if I overlooked it. Here's a link. This was on Morning Edition February 6th and focuses on the Empire Builder...

Car hits Amtrak train in upstate New York

This happened Sunday afternoon (the 27th) about 37 miles east of Syracuse. No injuries were reported, at least as of last night. Here's a link. http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2013/01/car_hits_amtrak_train_in_oneid.html#incart_river_default

Boston North to Boston Back Bay

My Amtrak trip to Boston is this week. If anything of note happens during the trip or if it takes me three hours to get from Back Bay Station to my hotel  I'll post an update when I return.

Thanks. These are good suggestions too.

Boston North to Boston Back Bay

Thanks for all the information. I'll take this post with me (though I wonder about access to the mall around 9 p.m., when I think the train is due; while most stores are probably closed, there might be some restaurants or other places open). I'll have printed directions with me and the hotel...

Boston North to Boston Back Bay

Thanks for the quick response. I'm at the Hilton Boston Back Bay, at least for now. I was mostly wondering about the station itself. When AlanB was discussing the subway stations, he mentioned something about some stations being easier to navigate than others. That made me wonder about the ease...

Boston North to Boston Back Bay

I'm scheduled to take the Lake Shore Limited into Boston Back Bay in March, and reading this thread has raised some questions for me about my luggage and getting around the area. I have a conference in Boston I'm supposed to be attending and have a reservation at a hotel that's supposed to be...

    Deaths in derailment in Poland

The BBC is reporting four deaths as of now. Approximately 280 people said to be on board. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14509200

Using someone else’s expired boarding pass

A man's been arrested after flying from NY to LA with someone else's boarding pass that was a day old. As you'll see (if the link works), he's done this more than once. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/06/man-from-nigeria-flies-to-lax-without-valid-boarding-pass-and-identification.html

Train derailment in Rome, New York

This was posted on this site at a little after 5:00 p.m. Eastern. As of now, it's unclear if it's "a freight or a passenger train", according to the story. http://ithaca-cortland.ynn.com/content/top_stories/546176/train-derails-in-rome/

    Baseball and Trains and Travel

The Toledo Mud Hens. The Hens don't play where they played when I lived in the area. There's a new (at least relatively new) ballpark in Toledo. I have no idea how close the new park is to the Amtrak station, but it has to be closer than the old place was.

June Trains Magazine - Article regarding TSA and Amtrak

Associated Press is reporting that Joseph Boardman told a Senate panel that "trains more vulnerable than planes". That's from the headline on the Boston Globe site. Here's a link to the story. Sorry if this was already posted somewhere else...

CNN: "U.S. high-speed rail 'myths' debunked"

Here's a link to a commentary from U.S. Representative Louise Slaughter (from New York State) about high-speed trains. This was in the May 9th Syracuse Post-Standard. http://blog.syracuse.com/opinion/2011/05/mondays_commentary_rep_louise.html And a link to the editorial that appeared in that...

CNN: "U.S. high-speed rail 'myths' debunked"

Another commentary from the CNN site about high speed trains. It was written by a faculty member at the University of Dayton and posted this morning. Sorry if this is in another thread and I missed it. "Why all the anger over high speed trains?"...

First Time to NYP - Advice?

The fact that at least one person considers Penn Station “very complex” (someone else in this thread said “it will appear to be complete chaos”, though that was in reference to going upstairs at the station, something I’m not sure I’ll have to do) is making me a little nervous. With narrow...

High-speed rail travel featured on CBS News' Sunday Morning

I also thought it was well done. And while they were relatively small parts of the segment, I thought the clips with Walter Cronkite in Japan during the 1960's and Charles Osgood in France during the 1990's were especially interesting. Maybe, as was stated toward the end of the segment...

High-speed rail travel featured on CBS News' Sunday Morning

Scheduled for this coming Sunday (August 23rd) is a feature about high-speed rail in California. Below is a description of what will be covered, along with a link to the CBS News website. This comes on at 9:00 a.m. here in central New York (that's Eastern time, of course), but you know what...

From the CNN site - about lost Amtrak tickets

I haven't posted here in ages, but thought this was worth mentioning. I just hope it's not in a thread already. I've done some looking and some searching and haven't seen it. My apologies if I've missed it. This is dated yesterday: it's a letter to "Travel Troubleshooter" from an Amtrak...
