    What happened with #22 (29) #21 (29)

Anyone know if they are back to running trains all the way through (albeit detoured)... i.e. no bus bridge as reported for 22 (30)?

    Another Grade Crossing Fatality

This video is very instructive on many levels. Trains looks to be moving at least 50 or 60mph when it hits the auto, yet by the time the last car exits the video frame, it has slowed considerably, maybe 25mph or less... all in just the length of the train.

    LAX Boarding Procedure

I boarded the both the Southwest Chief and Sunset Limited at LAUS within the past week as a sleeping car passenger. There was a check-in kiosk near the main waiting for coach passengers, but not for sleeping car passengers. It was difficult to hear announcements due to the noise in the...

    Poplar Bluff, Mo

Trogdor, many thanks, you are exactly right! Wednesday's train 22 will turn at Fort Worth to become 21/421.

    Poplar Bluff, Mo

I had reservations out of Dallas tomorrow (Wednesday April 27) on 421 to Los Angeles. Amtrak called me this morning and said train would be cancelled, no alternate transportation provided.

    Busy Day for Amtrak Tomorrow

Yes, I'll be in the 422 portion of the train (car 2230)... these rooms are usually hard to come by so close to the departure date, that's why I was so surprised at the availability just 1 day before departure. It'll be interesting to see how full the 422 sleeper is.

    Busy Day for Amtrak Tomorrow

On a whim, I canceled my return plane ticket from LA to Dallas for Monday and booked a roomette on the Sunset leaving LA tomorrow (9/3/06). Not only was I surprised I could get a roomette with barely 24 hours notice, but there must be quite a few roomettes available on this train... the price...

    mbna shorts agr points

Same thing happened to me this month... I was shorted 997 points. I called MBNA last Monday, they took a statement from me, and told me someone would research the problem. All of the missing points were posted to my account just a few days later. Sounds like they are starting to get up to...

What's up with the Texas Eagle

I rode the Eagle from Dallas to Los Angeles last week... The train was almost 3 hours late into Dallas on Nov. 14th and we lost at least another hour between Dallas and Fort Worth due to a broken rail... resulting in a very late arrival into San Antonio... I think around 3:00am or 4:00am...

The "Sunset Limited" is gone indefinitely

Any word on whether or not there will still be an overnight layover in San Antonio for 421 since there won't be a westbound Sunset coming from Florida to connect with? Ideally, once 421 reaches San Antonio in the evening and discharges and picks up passengers, it would make sense that the train...

    Texas Eagle derailment in Texas

The local Dallas news station is reporting that the Texas Eagle has derailed this evening in Van Zandt County, east of Dallas... no other details given. Anybody have any further information?

Chicago Union Station to O'Hare area

I'll be traveling to Chicago at the end of the month, more specifically to the Westin O'Hare hotel in Rosemont near the airport. Is it reasonably easy to get from Union Station in downtown Chicago to the Westin? I seem to recall some sort of commuter rail line station very close to the hotel...

    Sunset LTD time change

To get to Dallas via SW Chief, I take the Chief to from LAX to Galesburg, IL and then take the shuttle to Springfield, IL where I catch the Texas Eagle.

    Sunset LTD time change

This is good news for me, as I take the Eagle/Sunset from Dallas to Los Angeles and back several times a year. I am more likely to patronize the train if I can make the whole trip by train. I still take the Eagle/Sunset westbound to LA, but the unreliability of the eastbound connection between...

    Southwest Chief speeds

BNSF mile markers are posted every mile, UP has markers every quarter mile. They are white with black numerals, not very large, except for some on the UP which are leftover from the Southern Pacific days.

    Southwest Chief speeds

I rode the Chief this weekend and it still runs 90mph for much of the route. During the daylight hours the eastbound Chief ran 90mph from east of Flagstaff, AZ through most of northern New Mexico into Albuquerque. Slower speeds from Albuquerque through Raton to Trinidad, where we picked up...

    Southwest Chief speeds

I'll be traveling on the Southwest Chief next week from Fullerton to Galesburg, then connecting to the Texas Eagle for my return to Dallas. Are there still any 90mph sections on the Southwest Chief route? And if so, can anyone give me the approximate locations? Thanks.

Texas Eagle - SW Chief connection

I'll be traveling from Dallas to LA in November, and given the recent unreliability of the Texas Eagle/Sunset connection in San Antonio (and occasional bus substitution), I'm considering taking the Eagle and the SW Chief instead. Can anyone tell me how reliable the Springfield/Galesburg...

    Best side on train #1

I didn't realize the Sunset only runs with one locomotive on the eastern part of its route. I always take it from San Antonio westward where it already has two locomotives. Any idea where it picks up the second engine?

    Best side on train #1

Also, Battalion51 has the consist correct with just one minor update... the Sunset has always run with two locomotives when I have ridden it... both needed for the mountainous terrain the trains traverses in the Southwest.
