    Biden and Amtrak

And here I was all excited that I had an answer for your first question...

    Turning away business

Not really. A pretty large percentage of the active commercial airline fleet is about 15 years old or less...and a significant number are about 10 years or less. The older ones are less fuel-efficient, and these guys are trying really hard to save $$$. That said, I'm not afraid to fly on a...

    CZ Detours near GSC

I was amazed. We passed MOW crews on the way to Ottumwa, still working on shoring things up. There were also a bunch of used sandbags piled up in front of the doors. And, sadly, we passed farm after farm that had been turned into lakes and ponds.

    CZ Detours near GSC

FWIW, my wife and I (and three of my four boys!) just came through the tunnels on Tuesday, and we didn't detour. We also passed over the flooded parts of Iowa, which was really sobering. They restored CZ service on Saturday, and we departed CHI on Monday, so it was pretty touch and go...but we...

    virginia question

As a regular daily VRE commuter, I'd have to recommend against the VRE for this trip (if you haven't already made up your mind on the Regional). It's 104 miles from F'burg to Williamsburg, and the drive can be unpleasantly traffic-y. I like the Richmond idea, 'cause it's a nice ride. But my...

    CZ Update

Hey Wendy, If you're still reading this, I'm on the CZ on this coming Monday, and Amtrak just told me not to worry, I should be OK for then. So if I'm OK on the 7th, your oughta be OK on the 13th. Good luck!

Any news yet on how the testing went

I'm supposed to ship out on the CZ on Monday the 7th, and when I talked to the Amtrak folks tonight they said the *tentative* plan is for full (but verrrry) slow service to be restored on Saturday the 5th. BNSF got all the northern stuff through Iowa (Ottuma, etc.) squared away Wednesday...

Coast Starlight Restart and Pacific Parlour Cars?

They told me they had five cars ready and were waiting on UP to give mgmt the thumbs-up...I gotta believe, though, it takes more than five cars to run the service?

    New York to Boston

What a difference a few years make -- Acela F food now is a choice of three hot main entrees developed by Citronelle chef Michel Rocard. Apps include a cheese plate with a really nice artichoke heart. A whole-grain roll. A salad. Regular beverages, plus a white or red wine. Coffee or tea to...

Coast Starlight Restart and Pacific Parlour Cars?

I was told by Amtrak officials this week that they hope to have five Pacific Parlour Cars in service on the CS in "late May or early June." The biggest refurb will involve the theater downstairs: the little 30-inch TV is being replaced with a 52-inch plasma screen. And there will be something...

The Year in Rail Travel Points

Hi, If I were to detail my trips as others on this thread have done, it would hog all the bandwidth on this server! But in general, my AGR points rack up because my job is now effectively split between Washington, DC and NYC. I'm on the Acela at least once a week, more often than not...

Baseball, Acela, And A Very Special Trip

Last Wednesday I was rolling from NY Penn to Washington Union Station after a day of work and meetings. I cashed in an upgrade coupon to sit in First Class, and sitting right there two seats away was none other than Cal Ripken, Jr. For those of you on this board who don't follow baseball, he's...

    Jungle Train through Malaysia

Nice pictures! How long did that trip take? I may be in Singapore in February and looking for a train ride...

Adding someone to a sleeper reservation

Hi Rafi and Peter, Unfortunately, Amtrak has changed the policy on that, as of mid-November. Now only passengers who are holding Sleeping Car tickets can get their meals covered. Coach passengers who join you in your sleeper still have to pay for their meal. It's a bummer, but I can see where...

    A Tardy Hello

I've been posting for two weeks and lurking for months before that, so I guess I owe everyone a Real Introduction: I did everything in my life at a very young age. Now I'm old at a very young age. Go figger. Four kids: two in college, one a HS senior, and one who just started HS in the Fall...

What does your Forum User Name mean?

Mine's pretty dull too, and I don't have an excuse: I write for a living! My name's Jim. I live in Va. Hence, JimInVa. I wasn't born here or raised here, but moved to the DC area because my employer moved me. It's just a temporary move...I've only been here 19 years! Trying to relocate...

    New Acela Food

I thought they dropped the lasagna (which I actually kind of dig)? Maybe they ran out of new food? Sure wish they still did the two little truffles in a gold box...great little "gimmes" for the kids when I got home.

    My AGR Marathon Trip

I think I enjoyed the page as much as the report on the trip!! Well done...wish I could do stuff like that.

    New Acela Food

OK I'll admit it: I'm at least as much of a food geek as I am a train geek. And I will have to confess that as much as I enjoy the "diner experience" with new friends/seatmates, every diner meal in recent years has had me harking back to the fine steak dinner I enjoyed in 1977 on board the Lake...

    What a difference!

It's actually even worse than that: they have to count EVERY ketchup packet, EVERY plastic fork, EVERY salt packet, and on, and on and on. And if the numbers don't add up, the LSA has to PAY FOR IT out of their own pockets. No wonder they get grumpy about having to do their "paperwork." JimInVa...
