    Winter Park Express

After they killed the Ski Train, I never thought this would come back. Exciting stuff. It is a long read. Long story short, CDOT is building a platform at Winter Park Resort and doing other improvements. Will it be a daily, year-round service? Just once a week during the ski season? Lots...

    Amtrak Ski Train March 14

Amtrak official seems optimistic. It's a busy line as it is, but it would be great if they could have regular service next winter. http://www.skyhidailynews.com/news/15197048-113/could-winter-park-ski-train-make-a-comeback

How Much to Tip on Overnight Trains

This might be heresy to some, but I usually tip $20 per trip but I give them the money at the beginning. The obvious risk is that they take the money and run. I always receive good service this way. I have seen other Sleeping Car neighbors get less than first class treatment compared to me...

Texas Eagle hits Semi in Arlington, TX

Of the three accidents mentioned, only this one had anything to do with a crossing collision so crossing gates would not have changed anything in the other two. Being from Arlington, I hear the public transportation comment often. It's usually as gratuitous and full of derision as it is in...

Texas Eagle hits Semi in Arlington, TX

Could be big trouble for Amtrak if there was no horn. Witness was very detailed about how the horn usually startles them but they didn't hear it (could this be an issue of replacing the blaring K5LA horn with that awful noise device that sounds like a dying 1950s city bus?). I can't say I have...

    Tunnels on the California Zephyr

I bought this book in Grand Junction, CO and I am glad I did. It has tunnel info, and the history many of the tunnels, among other things. They have books for many other routes. The author has 3 different books that cover the entire CZ route in segments. "A Guidebook to Amtrak's California...

Amtrak and TxDOT to study new service from SHV to DFW

It's a 3 hour drive from DFW to Bossier. It is very popular to go for the day or a quick overnight trip. I've even taken Amtrak and their bus connection. There are also some bus services that cater to gamblers. As much as I like riding the train, the bus is just too much of a pain. If I...

Amtrak and TxDOT to study new service from SHV to DFW

If the casinos want to pitch in, I'm all for it but I won't hold my breath. There have been some big casinos go out of business in Bossier so not even casinos are making it rain, particularly in this economy. A casino train might scare away some regular travelers anyway. Some people might...

    OT: Texas travel advice

Stay on the train until 5am......genius. Where were you several years ago?

    OT: Texas travel advice

I am quite sure. They initially told me that I couldn't go from JAX to FTW at all. You just have to understand that calling any customer service line will differ greatly from rep to rep. We also need to be patient as we can't always expect the agents to know the routes as well as we do. I...

Amtrak and TxDOT to study new service from SHV to DFW

The answer to question 2 is simple. People will actually ride it. Going to the casino is a leisure activity. People like our slower LD trains when taking leisure trips. People don't like our slower LD trains when they need to get somewhere for business or when time is even a minor factor...

Amtrak and TxDOT to study new service from SHV to DFW

Here is the link for the star-telegram. Looks like they might add another stop to the Eagle. http://blogs.star-telegram.com/honkin_mad/2012/03/gamblers-take-note-amtrak-exploring-fort-worth-to-shreveport-passenger-rail-service-east-texas-suppo.html

    Wow-Heartland Flyer sold out....

As others have mentioned, I wonder if they are accounting for an extra coach. There is almost always a coach and P42 sitting near the FTW station and I believe it is for the Flyer. Just saw it sitting there today except this time it was just an old bi-level coach without the engine.

    OT: Texas travel advice

It is baffling to me that there is no rail connection between DFW and Houston. I remember when they used to split the TE in Dallas and go to Houston. The Houston train was somewhat like the Heartland Flyer. It was either one or two coaches and an older lounge car from what I remember...

The Best Days Of Passenger Rail Lie Ahead

Great post. I especially like the wording of the WOW factor for first time riders. I remember it was the grand presence of the superliner train that stuck with me the most as a young kid and I've been a fan ever since. The single level cars just don't have the same effect on me. To this day...

    Amtrak Refund Policy

One idea is to call them and change the date of your reservation to beyond 7 days and then call later to get the refund. My plans changed on a trip last month and I was able to change the date of travel (with sleeper) with no penalty.

    Romney's plan for Amtrak

Regarding the subsidies for small town airports, the fact is, they still exist and probably always will exist. I've lived in communities served by the commuter airlines and I could buy a ticket to a major city for the same price as if I flew direct from hub to hub. It's like getting 2 legs for...

    Most Interesting Destination By Amtrak?

Haven't been all over but as of now my vote is Winter Park, CO on the CZ. It's a wonder in itself just to get a train to an elevation of 9200 feet. Going west you enter the 6 mile long Moffatt Tunnel and exit at the base of the huge ski resort. I've only ridden it twice and both times had...

    Romney's plan for Amtrak

Agreed. I thought it was just me but it seems to me that you have to be either far to the left or far to the right to be heard these days. If people hate trains then I guess I will respect that but what really irritates me is when the politicians hate trains based on the false belief that the...

    Private "Piggyback" Operators

That is a shame. From what I heard it was often sold out so I wonder why they didn't try to raise prices a little. Thanks for the update. I hadn't seen the train since the mid 90s. I'm still sorry it is gone. Do you know what the Canadians are doing with it?
