Tried to post this on the Tucson Shooting thread but it was closed to further discussion... please feel free to move this post if necessary.
Just got off the TE in SPI after boarding in LAX on October 6th. This is the train onto which was connected the original train that was held in TUS after the shooting for FBI investigation. All the subsequent trains bypassed Tucson and passengers were bussed to Deming for boarding and unboarding. But on this day, the consist was attached to my train carrying the passengers who had been detained during the Fed investigation and who had been confined to the Doubletree by the station. All luggage was investigated and is being shipped directly to pax residences. They said they had been allowed to order anything from the restaurant.
When the shooting began at around 8am they pax quickly told to leave the cars. Some had been sleeping. Almost none had their belongs... and ran for safety. The Red Cross was called in to get diabetic meds and other essentials. The group was taken to a box store and given a shopping allowance for toiletries and clothing. Amtrak offered to reimburse those who chose to fly home and some even rented a car. They all said Amtrak would completely reimburse for the fare and any expenses. Most were in good spirits and looked upon it as an adventure of sorts.
But there were other repercussions... the services of the SL and TE also had the additional passengers which were attached from the effected train. The ONE dining car was also contending with the mandate for each party to sit separately... so most sleeping car pax were served meals in their rooms... and the SCA's were running back and forth through the train. So this was the consist:
SLEEPER / SLEEPER / PASSENGER CAR / PASSENGER CAR / PASSENGER CAR / PASSENGER CAR / SSL / DINING CAR / SLEEPER / SLEEPER. 10 cars. Noted the SSL ran short on food as well. More supplies loaded on along the way.
