Amtrak Board Member Enrique Sosa Resigns

WASHINGTON – Amtrak today announced that Enrique Sosa, an Amtrak Director since 2004, has resigned from the railroad’s Board of Directors effective March 1, 2007. Sosa was appointed by President George W. Bush in August 2004 and again in January 2006.

Amtrak Board Chairman David M. Laney and President and CEO Alex Kummant lauded Sosa’s contributions and service as a director.

With his strong business background, Sosa played a key role in the development of Amtrak’s Strategic Reform Initiatives that were approved by the Board of Directors in April 2005, and are continuing to be implemented by the corporation today. Sosa was particularly interested in the economics of Amtrak – increasing revenues and reducing costs in order to make the corporation more cost effective. He served on the Board during the Empire Builder service enhancement project, which resulted from these concepts. The initiative significantly improved the Empire Builder’s financial performance, and the concept is being applied to other trains system-wide.

In his resignation letter to President Bush, Sosa stated, “It has been a privilege to have been on the Amtrak Board for the past two years. It has also been a very rewarding experience for I truly believe that real and very significant progress has been made towards seeing an Amtrak that is fulfilling its role.” He continued, “Railroad transportation is of increasing importance and an efficient Amtrak is much needed today and in the years to come.” He noted an increasing number of other obligations as the reason for his resignation.

Prior to his retirement Sosa oversaw worldwide chemical and marketing operations for Amoco before the corporation merged with BP in 1999. As Amoco Executive Vice President, Sosa headed the company’s chemicals sector before becoming president of BP Amoco Chemicals once the companies merged. Prior to joining Amoco, Sosa was Senior Vice President of Dow Chemical and President of Dow North America. He was also a member of Dow’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

Mr. Sosa holds Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees from the University of Florida.
