I'm excited to see pro-Amtrak and high speed rail articles. Good article. I think if Congress gave money to have a good transportation system, the economy can fix itself.
One thing I don't like about the article is how it says, routes lose $400 per passenger. So the minute I buy a ticket and step aboard, thats an automatic $400 down the tube? I don't think so. Seats are perishable, just like the airlines. It should be, Amtrak loses X amount of money per passenger mile. It costs roughly the same to operate the Sunset no matter how many passengers are on board. Maybe a few cents for the extra paper thats used for their ticket. There are dozons of O&D city pairs on the Sunset, making that statement a little inaccurate. Airlines don't say it costs X amount per passenger that travels. It depends on the route. They measure in passenger miles.
If anyone has a better explanation, please say.
