I know there's another discussion on this in the non-rail forum but this is more specific about Amtrak.

I personally was supposed to be on an Oakland-Los Angeles flight on Christmas night. My big worry was about getting there on time to take the Big Blue Bus route 3 to Santa Monica where I was staying, and before they stopped service for the night. But then my flight got his with cancellation because of a lack of a required crew complement. I got a ride back home after giving up on customer service and waiting about 20 minutes in line and managed to book an EMY-SLO-LAX ticket (the app indicated it was the last one). I think that was my only reasonable expense incurred. I didn't ask for mileage that my family members incurred. I called in and my lodging rebooked (rather than cancel as a no-show) where I ended up paying just for the nights I stayed, so that didn't cost more. I might have even saved a bit on food and transportation since I didn't spend a day in LA County.

I'm obviously not alone. I met several passengers waiting for the Pacific Surfliner at SLO who were scheduled for Southwest flights that were cancelled. On the train I asked the conductor scanning my ticket how busy it was (with the Southwest meltdown) and he said it was the busiest day after Christmas he'd ever seen. It did get more interesting when we got to Santa Barbara and I could smell the alcohol as passengers boarded.

It worked for me since I was only missing one day and my trip was less than 400 miles. But I've heard there were people around the country moving far longer distances on short notice via Amtrak.
