Chicago connection

[first time traveler]

I will be traveling via rail for the first time next month. I am transferring in Chicago from the 28 Empire Builder (arrives 3:45pm) to the 48 Lake Shore Limited (departs 7:20pm). What is the probability that I will make the connection, and in the event that I do not, would I be placed on the following day's 48? Thank you.

First Time,

The odds are in your favor, that you will indeed make that connection. The Empire Builder, trains #8 & 28, has one of the best on time records. However, in the off chance that #8/28 is horribly delayed and misses the connection, then you don't need to worry.

Amtrak will book you a local hotel room and pay for it, give you some money for meals, and then put you on the next days Lake Shore Limited.
