Looks like per google maps, Klamath Falls is closer than Eugene. Eugene most certainly has car rental outlets. Does KFS? I would be concerned about the car rental being open at a 10:00PM CS arrival time.

Is there a closer station than Eugene or KFS?

As Eugene is the home of the University of Oregon, finding a car rental agency open 'til 10:00pm is more of a possibility than Klamath Falls. But I wouldn't bet on finding one in either city.

Actually, if you're taking the train to Eugene you don't need to worry about what's open at 10:00 p.m. since the southbound CS gets there at 5 p.m.

I know Hertz and Enterprise both have downtown locations that are open until 6, and of course the Eugene airport locations are open later than

that (but you'd have to take a taxi out there).

And, at the risk of being overly pedantic, the closest Amtrak station to Medford IS Medford. You can book a Thruway bus there, but if you are heading

southbound it requires an overnight in KFS, so probably not useful to the OP. Plus, renting a car in Eugene and driving down to Medford will be way,

way faster than taking the train to KFS and connecting via bus or rental car there. (for southbound travelers, as the OP implies he is)

Jim, as someone who has lived in Kfalls and currently lives near Medford, getting off in Eugene and driving down would be your best bet. The car rental agencies in Kfalls are at the airport, which is not very close to the train station. And highway 140 from Kfalls to Medford is pretty during the day, but it is also a trecharous 2 lane, mountanous highway, full of people who think they are driving on an Expressway. The drive from Eugene to Medford is only about 2 to 2 1/2 hours long. You will be going over several mountain passes when you get down to southern Oregon, but since you will be on a 4 lane intersate it is not bad at all. And if you like to gamble there is a casino just south of Roseburg, in Canyonville than can be a nice way to break up the drive.
