New to Amtrak Unlimited and found it in researching for this trip. Been riding Amtrak for as long as I can remember around the Northeast but never took a true long distance train (aside from an overnight to Savannah on the Meteor a couple years ago).
Took the LSL from NYP through CHI and the Zephyr to RIC for the connection to BART. The new Metropolitan lounge in Moynihan was stunning — especially as I am quite used to the usual Penn Station being from NJ and using NJT.
LSL was fine and we were on schedule the whole time — which I understand is quite rare — contemporary dining was disappointing (as expected) but bearable. VI feels pretty worn at this point — but I still prefer the VI roomette itself over the Superliner Roomette.
Updated Metropolitan lounge in CHI was fantastic and not too busy on the second level — went there after eating the nescecary deep dish pizza and riding the CTA Loop.
After getting into the superliner roomette my friend and I had our bags searched in what they called « random searches » — but we later talked to some other people and it seems like they just searched people who were going all the way to California from CHI. Other than that and the new dining — the Zephyr was amazing — especially being my first true cross-country train. Route was breathtaking and the staff was better than expected. Lost about an hour over donner on the last day — but arrived 20 minutes early into Richmond after the schedule padding arriving into SAC. Photos below — only 10 photos per post so ill make one or two more — enjoy!
