The CZ was 2 1/2 hours late from Chicago on June 2. Arrived at the station at 7:30 a.m. for 8:05 a.m. departure sans breakfast or coffee. We were expecting to be among the passengers toward the end of breakfast call. When 9:30 passed, we gave up all hope for breakfast on the train, but at least the coffee in our sleeper car would be waiting. Imagine our surprise when Denver station offered only a coke machine and candy/chips machine. In desperation we ate candy bars at 9:00 and counted the minutes until boarding and finally having our cups of hot coffee.

Boarded at 10:30 a.m., got to the top of the stairs on our sleeper, coffee urn unplugged and cold...no coffee! Our attendant explained that from now on, the new policy will be no coffee after 9:30 a.m. Amtrak wants its sleeper passengers to buy coffee in the cafe car. It seems this is another one of the "amenities" Amtrak is dropping.

So, be aware that while the station is still under construction, there is no coffee and pastry kiosk available. There will be no sleeper coffee available for late boarding passengers. I sense a rebellion in the near future!

File a complaint.
In this case it may work because coffee is still available in the cafe car, but it's still dumb and Amtrak should be told it's dumb. Will the sleeper attendants now retrieve coffee for the handicapped from the cafe car? Because they're going to have to do so now, basic ADA accomodation.

This is a perfect example of being penny wise and pound foolish! I would think that stuff like this will result in fewer tips and more work and complaints for the OBS! And someone paying hundreds, if not thousands of dollars for their room will have to buy $2 Amcoffe in the Diner???!!!!

Please folks, complain so this cutting mania stops before it really causes major problems on the LD Trains!

It is painful for the attendant, but I will not tip if there is no coffee available outside of "designated breakfast hours." So, no coffee equals no tip. Enough people do that, and you can bet the employees will either purposefully violate the "rule" and brew coffee, or complain to their bosses loud enough at the loss of income that the "rule" is gotten rid of.

Writing letters and making phone calls helps a lot too!

Good God! :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

Folks wanted slumbercoaches?

They are getting slumbercoaches, only they are called, and priced accordingly, roomettes and bedrooms. :)

Next Amtrak will tell people that bed linens and towels are being eliminated - or cost extra - and folks should either bring their own, or expect to pay extra for both the linens and towels, plus there will be a "room cleaning and bed making charge" for those who want this 'extra' service. :( :( :(

Latest hot idea to cut amenities: Run the sleepers like a hostel! You pay for a bed in a room, linens are extra and if you want soap, shampoo etc its for sale in the cafe! All food and drink can be purchased in the cafe or diner!

If you want a Private Room you can pay for all of the beds and a shower will be available for a nominal fee!

Actually Scott already nailed this in his Slumbercoach Post!

Hyperbole? It can happen folks, cutting mania is a slippery slope!

And don't forget the upcoming "round wheels" fee! Mandatory wheel roundening charges are the future, mark my words! ;)

We had the same thing happen to us, train late and missed breakfast. There was coffee available when we boarded our sleeper.

I always pack snacks and water for any train or bus trip. You just never know.

We ate bacon jerky and cookies to hold us over until lunch.

I think I resembled that remark some time ago. God I hate reading about crap that we "joke" might happen, and then it actually happens.

Hello "hostel on wheels"
