Diesel Engine on the NEC

Today, while awaiting a MARC train at BWI, I noticed a single-level Amtrak Consist fly by going south (a few minutes before 11AM). There were no sleepers... not certain whether there was a cafe car or not. But the strangest thing is that it was being led by a Diesel loco. No pantagraph. Has there been a change in engine change location for the regionals that continue south of DC, or did I witness a hospital train?

Occasionally, when DC is tight on Diesels to head south, Philly will throw a Diesel on instead and send the train down the corridor. That's probably what happened with the train you saw, which I'm guessing was the Carolinian.

when I rode 195 to Washington last year they switched locos in philly that day, so we were under diesel the rest of the run
