direct trains only?

I just went to AGR to book a coach northeast zone trip from Springfield to Philadelphia, aiming for the 475 shuttle/175 regional ... and was surprised to see as my only options the two direct regionals that originate in Springfield. In the fine print, I discovered "Rewards members can redeem earned points for one-way trips; two reservations are required for round-trip travel. Reservations can only be made on direct trains between your origin and destination cities."

Is this a new restriction? Or is this just for online booking, and I can get what I want if I phone AGR?

That's an online restriction. The online system cannot book connections, even one's like the shuttles. Calling will allow you to get the trains you want.
