Hi All, I'm back. "Retired" to Eugene, OR. Hear the Coast Starlight and Cascades at crossings but haven't had a chance to ride in months. That will change.

My husband & I are taking our first Amtrak trip next week from Chicago to Whitefish , Montana . Do you have any advice for first timers ? I have a question if you would be so kind , will a Amtrak employee put our suitcases in our bedroom or are we responsible for that ? We are unsure of the whole luggage handling aspect of the trip. Any tips on what meals to order and how to take good pictures with a digital camera from a moving train would be greatly appreciated also . Have you been to Montana ? We are very excited and expecting scenery that will take our breath away !

Aloha

Tips for first timers, RELAX, you will store your bags downstairs in the Superliner, used on that route. Here is a link to my Empire Picture Gallery as I went the other way.

There are 2 other forums here that may help you further. 1 is just for beginners questions, and the other just discussion on Amtrak.

Hope you find a car with clean windows!

The glass used in the Superliner windows does tend to reduce the light coming through, so bump up your ISO setting to 200 or 400 depending on how bright it is, try to use a faster shutter speed to compensate for the movement of the train and keep the lense as close as possible to the window so you have less chance of picking up reflections of things in the coach in the glass....

Sometimes it don't work so well, other times it does.

Sunset and sunrise work best as the bright light blocks out any imperfections and scratches in the window you would see at other times.
