As described in a post that can be found in the thread Bedroom downgraded to Coach a week before departure, we had something similar happen to us just this last June. We were able to get a refund, but when we went to remake our reservations for later in the year, the total cost of the new reservations came to $679 more than what we’d paid six months earlier. This included having to pay cash for a train reservation that had been made using travel points. (Due to the higher fares, our points didn’t go as far as they did in December!) Had the couple in the article tried to use the credit voucher they’d received it probably wouldn’t have bought them as much travel as their original reservation had.

If we’re ever in this situation again, rather than requesting a cash refund and a refund of our travel points, we plan to ask Amtrak Customer Relations to reschedule us to a future date (which we’ll have determined in advance) with the same trains and accommodations as on our original reservation and at the same price we originally paid. By the time we travel, the fares will undoubtedly have gone up and we’re sure to save hundreds of dollars!
