The CL also runs with as few as two coaches. Usually one is a Coach-Bag for some reason... On the same token the CZ in June ran with only two sleepers plus the transdorm.

I am frequently at the Harpers Ferry station along with a few other rail buffs watching the CL come in. Always a trans dorm sleeper followed by two superliner sleepers. The coach cars vary between two or three. During the summer it is a good bet that it will be three.

You've got the sleepers switched on the Silver Star and Meteor - the Meteor carries 3, the Star carries 2. The Meteor seems to carry 5, not 4, coaches more often than not. The Auto Train uses the consist below (on northbound 52, they don't turn the train at either station because it is too long, so south 53 is this consist in reverse, although autoracks are pulled around to the rear of the train):

Note that the Auto Train varries between 3 and 4 regular sleepers, depending on the season. Additionally, during heavy travel periods, more coaches can be added, and there are times when it runs with two dining cars for the coach section, in addition to the lounge car.

I also agree with the other's who stated that the Capitol always has two regular sleepers.

The Zephyr on the other hand normally runs with 2 sleepers only. I'm not sure if it happened this summer, if it did then I didn't hear about it, but many summers the Zephyr will run with one extra sleeper on the rear of the train that is short turned at Denver to head back to Chicago.

And the Starlight usually runs with 3 sleepers during peak periods, 2 during off peak times.

First off, didn't we just have this topic a couple of months ago? Secondly, correct me if I'm wrong but it's not about whether it's Meteor or Star these days, it's about which crew you've got. I believe 98-91 is three sleepers and 92-97 are two sleepers.

In July-August it was 97/98 with three sleepers daily and 91/92 with two daly.

I rarely see the AT without 2 diners in the coach section. There's been 2 every time I've seen it in recent memory. They can add 2 extra coaches or sleepers to the normal consist, for a total of 18 Superliners before they run into HEP problems.

91 handed its third sleeper over to 97 around June 2008. I haven't seen a 91 with more than 2 since then, and I haven't seen a 97 with fewer than 3 since then.

When we began boarding the eastbound Zephyr in Emeryville, at 8:45 AM on Sept 27, 2009, I wasn't really awake yet, so I was only looking for car 631, and not paying close attention to the consist. From what little I remember, there were only two sleepers and no extra sleeper at the end. While we were boarding they announced that the diner was open, and they were serving breakfast. I thought that a little unusual, especially since they were really nagging passengers to get right to the diner to be seated, and once the diner was full they would begin a waiting list. I had eaten breakfast at the hotel, so my wife went to the diner alone for her breakfast.

When she got back from her breakfast, the "dining" car was announcing that lunch would begin at 11:30, on a first-come, first-serve basis, and as soon as the diner was full, they would begin a waiting list. I thought that was really unsual. We headed aft to the lounge car.

On the way back to our room from the lounge I mentioned to my wife that this wasn't a diner; it was a Cross Country Cafe.

It turned out that due to an "equipment failure", Amtrak had removed the dining car and substituded a CCC car, and the dining car crew was cranky. They were in a full "herding" mode, and moving people like there was no tomorrow. I skipped lunch too. Dinner wasn't bad, but it was still on that "fill it, then a waiting list mode," and remained that way 'till CHI.

I can't fault the crew for what they were doing, as a CCC is not designed to feed that many people for that long a train, and they were doing the best they could with what they had to work with. However, my wife did take exception to the fact that they were yelling at people to hurry up. She finally had had enough, and got in their faces. Ewwww, she made a fuss. Things did seem to lighten up after that. I didn't hear any more yelling at passengers.

Thayer, same situation with the Capitol Limited, except it currently uses one EVERY DAY! Its obvious that this was a bad ordered diner-substitute, but its too bad that they didn't have a extra regular diner (and the crew was just trying to help everyone, with a car that fits about twenty less people on a very busy day is not good).

Amtking, here are a few minor notes:

Just about every Superliner train usually has a coach baggage. Just a simple change is needed for that.

Maple Leaf and Pennsylvanians Amfleet I coach are the closest to the engine. Palmetto is all Amfleet II coaches.

As a few have pointed out, the Star runs two sleepers, Meteor three (the Star gets one extra from the LSL in the winter)

Sunset Limited sometimes runs without a baggage car.

Texas Eagle usually runs two coaches on non thru car days, three coaches and two sleepers on thru car days I believe.

Sorry for the schetchy righting.

Im not clear about your Texas Eagle comment? Do you mean coaches or sleepers? On the three days a week that the LAX-CHI and CHI-LAX combined trains are run there are full consists! Once summer is over the ssl is usually cut and there are days when there will be 2 coaches/2 sleepers (including the crew trans-dorm)! There are no baggage cars on these trains so they can be pretty short in the winter!Ive seen as few as 5 total , 2 sleepers, diner/lounge,2 coaches!(usually there is only 1 engine on this train also!)

Speaking of TE consists Jim I hope the day never comes back where the Eagle turns into the City and vice-versa. There were times where I would have to put a sheet or blanket on the sleeper seats just to keep from getting dirty. I doubt Chicago did much and if you lose the SSL look out!

Jim,

There was talk of cutting the SSL off the Eagle during the off season, but except maybe for a bad ordered car, to my knowledge it never happened last year. Not sure what might happen this year, but so far I haven't heard any rumblings that it might go away.

Yeah, when I rode the City in July the OBS told me they lost their SSL to the Eagles, I also remember riding the Eagle to CHI when we were run out of the lounge and/or CCC early so they could prep it for the turn to the City in CHI!

Upon getting on the City that night it was apparent that nothing much had been done to "prep" it, it was exactly the same as when we were run out in Southern Illinois!(seems like 6 hrs. is adequate time to clean/prep on a turn!)

Seems like CHI of all places would be best prepared to clean/prep cars but guess there are slackers in every biz so you

are correct, Ill use a sheet or blanket if the seats are scuzzy or ask the SA or SCA to do a little work when I find trash/dirt etc. that should have been cleaned before the train boarded!

Im curious myself if they start running a stub train SAS-NOL, and the City goes on to Fla. if NOL is up to doing proper prep, they have plenty of time now with the layovers on the SL????

Alan,

My understanding is that since the CONO lost their ssl the Eagles get to keep them, unless,as you said, one is bad ordered! Hopefully they wont start sharing again (as in my previous post), Ive ridden like 5 times to CHI without an ssl and once on the City and a CCC is NOT a SSL!!!

I have to hand it to NOL for cleaning and fixing what they can. I know several posters have had faulty equipment out of NOL but overall they try a lot harder than other turning points. I've even called the shop and asked them to clean the back window on #20 and they have surprised me, to the good, quite a few times. Back in my Safety days I was told that Chicago coach yard had the highest incidence of failed drug tests.

Thanks for the info, its good to know that the NOL crew is doing a good job since Ill be ridin g to/from there in a couple of weeks! Unfortunately Im also going to be into/out of CHI also on the Eagles and LSL and Cardinal so perhaps Ill get lucky and get new/clean cars! :)

Is there really a 30 axle minimum? Because I have a hard time imagining the Illini and Saluki running with five coaches, a cafe, and a motor...

Also, y'all were right on 97. Shows how much I pay attention to my own pictures and video.

Sadly yes, CN slapped that restriction on the City maybe 5 or 6 months ago, because they claimed that the short train was causing problems with the grade crossing equipment. Not sure if applies to the entire line, or just the southern portions.

I believe this restriction applies to the entire route. The Saluki and Illini have a miserable on-time record because of this restriction. Supposedly, the gates were supposed to be reprogrammed to allow higher speeds, but this apparently has not been done or completed yet. I'm mystified as to how this happened in the first place and why the state of Illinois or Sen. Dick Durbin haven't publicly complained more about this. Every other railroad seems to be able to accommodate shorter Amtrak trains.
